I don't have a TV, so I rarely watch it these days (and I don't miss it except for the Discovery Channel, TLC, and the History Channel), but have you ever noticed in TV commercials that the man is almost always the dummy and the woman is straightening him out on what product is better, etc. ? I mean, I really don't care, but it just seems that way to me.

Here's one from the local newspaper I found amusing. Quote from a tribal elder of the Blackfoot Nation, "The white man thought he was being clever giving us this windy, worthless God forsaken piece of land for our reservation, look who's laughing now. " He was speaking of the worlds largest wind power generation farm that is under construction on the rez that will supply enough power for a city of 250,000...

Speaking of reservations... the Navaho reservation (where I used to live) is a godforsaken desert. Lots of white people have thought that's becuase we chased them onto the worst land we could find. It isn't. They wanted it. Much of the reservation is "between the four sacred mountains", and is the traditional home. In other words... the Navaho got precisely what they wanted. However, there is oil, coal, national parks, tourism, and scenery there that could be exploited tremendously for economic improvement. I believe there is also uranium and some minerals to be mined.



The fact is, there are few places that have NOTHING of economic value these days. Whether it's wind ( we had lots of that, too ) or water or scenery or perhaps just the climate or geology... a resourceful and thoughtful people can better themselves and make thier own future whatever it is they desire.

PW, the Hopi, whose rez is in the middle of the Navajo, legends say that the elders directed them to live in that inhospitable part of the country did it so that the people could only survive by the grace of God, keeping them from drifting away from their religion. I can see from my visits there how this could work. A Hopi once told me the only thing their land is good for is looking at.

Next, in Houston, there is a Black Fireman's Union, and a Hispanic Firemans Union. Think there is a White Firemans Union? Can you think of what would be said about the folks that did join it. "It's just a fire mans KKK"
