This is all the owners manual has to say about DRL

Daytime Running Lights (DRL) — If Equipped
The headlights on your vehicle will illuminate when the engine is started and the transmission is in any gear except PARK. This provides a constant "Lights ON" condition until the ignition is turned OFF. The lights illuminate at less than 50% of normal intensity. If the parking brake is applied, the Daytime Running Lights (DRL) will turn OFF. Also, if a turn signal is activated, the DRL lamp on the same side of the vehicle may turn off for the duration of the turn signal activation. Once the turn signal is no longer active, the DRL lamp will illuminate.

That tells me it is not consumer programable. I will try to remember to check it out with the witech when I get the oppertunity

As said before DRL is law in Canada ( a safety feature since 1991 ), but interesting enough when 2 American friends moved back from here to the US ( different states ) they were both told to have them deactivated because it was a safety hazard. HUH ? Shad

The only safety aspect that I can see is that DRL's that use the headlights would enable you to drive at night with no marker or tail lights. I think GM had the best idea on some of their models, which was bright amber running lights. They're visible in daylight, but too dim to use at night.

2011 Ram DRL's (Daytime Running Lights) enabled....... finally......

Gotta ask here, because I used this info/thread to try to get the DRL's turned on in our 2011 2500 and the service department told us they could only do it if they "converted" the truck to Canada specs.

Can anyone perhaps provide kind of a step by step direction I can go with to get this resolved and the DRL's enabled here?

Appreciate any assistance here.....

Have a good one folks.

Wow this was my first real disappointment with TDR here. I really kinda ended up with a bunch of off topic BS and eventually ended up having to try to use justanswer.com.

After an interesting dialog with an (dodge expert) tech that had apparently never seen Witech scantool, I opted for a re-swing and got a dealer tech that pointed me in the right direction... my question posted was: 2011 RAM 2500 Trying to get DRL's turned on. I really need step by step with scantool... Pretend a service tech has no idea what he is doing...

He provided screen captures of scantool for me and the end response back to the tech was:

"What they had to do was set the TIPM and cluster to Canada, enable the DRL, then reset the cluster and/or TIPM back to USA. Whatever it was, the tenacity of the service manager at the LHM Dodge in Bountiful, UT. and the Scantool tech provided the desired results (took a couple of hours). This was after finding out it could supposedly be done via TDR.com, and being told it couldn't be done by LHM Dodge in Riverdale UT. The Bountiful UT shop figured it out along with updating the PCM, ECM, and WCM with warranty covered flashes. This evolution ended with no charge to the customer (myself). Customer service goes a LONG way. "

Now I have paid the 32. 00 charge to ask.com with a tip to the tech... ... ... It really just would have felt better if it had come from HERE... ...

Muchsnow.

Don,

When you had your DRL turned on, did the lights burn at half power (intensity) when in DRL mode? I have a 2015 Bighorn 2500 and the dealer told me the feature is not available on this truck. With everything on the truck networked and computerized, I bet the feature is in there somewhere.

I wish we could get the factory service manuals without taking out a second mortgage, and I would figure out myself what had to be done before going to a dealer.

I turned mine on myself on my 07 with a bully dog programmer , i also turned on several other dodges with it, the light goes out on the side that the blinker is activated on, and so does my 2012 Chrysler 300, Mo0nte

Yeah, but has anyone turned them on on a 2014/2015. I'm again told that despite being able to turn them on on a 2011, they can't be turned on on the 2014. This is something that should be on the EVIC screen like it is on a Mercedes Benz.... Somebody decide North Americans were to dumb to have it that simple?

14/15s configuration is vin driven and stored in a corporate data base.To change the configuration the option code must be added or removed from that data base. The dealer can add some easily, the removal is not so easy and not allowed if it is safety or emissions related.

I had this done on my 2015 and posted it in another thread. Use Internet Explorer, then google, not chrome, etc., and go to rambodybuilder.com

Link in post two above is the page to look for. It is in the wiring section under DRL. Vast volume of information in the whole site.

When mine were turned on they were the turn/parking lights on the bright level as p3er the signals. Friend of mine noticed them way up the road before he even could tell what kind of truck it was. Still, not the headlights on low power.

Is it necessary to run the VIN to know that DRL function is available on my 14 3500?
My dealership quoted me an hour labor plus tax to do it. That's $126 whether it works or not.
Thanks
Tb

Bit expensive, paid $19.00 for mine to be turned on. Only took them a few mins, while it was in for one of my free oil changes.

All 2013 to 2015, 2500 and up trucks have DRL built in, whether or not turned on. The VIN is only needed as Chrysler's system needs it to update the configuration of the truck, as you are adding DRL. Updating Chryslers system AND then reconfiguring your vehicle (the Body Control Module) will only take about 20 minutes at the most.

Print these instructions off and take to the dealer. Not all of them are familiar with the DRL function, and it will save them the time to go through some 500+ codes looking for it.

I just had them turned on on my 2015 Bighorn this morning, using the same code as for the 2014 trucks - LM1. The dealer charged me for 1/2 hour time. If you have projector lights, use the LM5 code.

Note the lights will only operate when in gear and the brake is not set. They operate at 50% power. They will cancel temporarily on the side of the vehicle with an active turn signal, for clarity.

Thanks The factory defaults are good with me but paying the dealer too much for enabling is not so good. I guess I'll call a few dealers in my area and get prices. I'd be OK with driving a few miles just to avoid getting ripped by a dealer that should be taking care of me.

GLAD THIS HAS AGAIN BEEN FIGURED OUT..oops caps lock on...... should still be an EVIC selectable item dammittt....

document with 2014

And changing the year in the URL above to 2014, and 2015, yields a document with 2014 at the title, though the same sales codes are provided. With 2015 they didn't fix the copypasta and left the 2014 at the top.

Thanks dude!... We'll just slide that one into the ole 2014 folder......

Just had the DRL update done to my 2014 Laramie dually at Saitta Trudeau Chrysler in Pahrump...

In the case of my truck with projector headlights, the so called "daytime running lights" turn out to be the orange front marker lights UNDER the headlights and not the actual headlights themselves! That utter disappointment aside, functionally they do work as advertised... the marker lights (a.k.a.: daytime running lights) now come on automatically when the truck is in gear and the parking brake is OFF.

So...

If you have to pay shop time to get this upgrade done (like I did), then I certainly wouldn't waste money on it.

If on the other hand you have a dealer who'll do it for free, then you might as well go for it because it certainly can't hurt anything!
