Is the paint on my '01 warranteed? If so, for how long? I can't find anything about it in my owner's manual/package.
I have 2 blisters on the grill surround, the part that would be chrome if it was anything but a Sport. I suppose I'll eventually end up getting the truck repainted 2 years from now at my own expense. I'll just have 'em use Ford paint, that ought to last !
DaimlerChrysler, since you're reading this, take note of my words: You're going to lose me and my family as customers if you keep painting $40,000 trucks with watercolors. Get your paint shop to get a few lessons from the Benz boys overseas, I doubt Mercedes scratch as easy as our trucks do. This is my 2nd Dodge truck with paint problems. It will also be my last. Anybody out there interested in a little class action suit to get some satisfaction on this stinky paint quality?

Brian, when my truck was about 3 months old I was out washing it when to my horror, several chunks of paint flaked off from the inside edge of the Rt rear wheelwell. I called my local dealer, Lithia Dodge, and told them what happened. The service rep says "let's get you scheduled with the body shop and have it repaired. "

I dropped off my truck and 3 days later it had been repainted and looked great. No charge, no questions, no haggles, they just took care of me. Wasn't the dealership I bought my truck at either. Been quite impressed with them. I would take it to your dealer, I believe the warranty is bumper-to-bumper 36K/36mo.

Vaughn

Briar,
This is what I found in my '00 warranty info booklet(the small one that comes with the owners manual)... .

"For an outer-body sheet metal panel-one that is finish painted and that someone can see when walking around the truck-the limits are 5years or 100,000 miles on the odometer, whichever occurs first. "

I know DC has been that way for some time(including most car manufacturers). I also remember seeing it in my '96 Ram warranty manual. The hard part will be keeping up on touching up the rock chips because the wrranty book also says the warranty will be void if corrosion results from rock chips (exposed metal) not taken care of.

Had a fender bender on my 01 at 2000 miles. Paint shop told me that the masking tape pulled the paint to the bare metal which was indicative of a poor paint job and highly unusual. I feel that the repair paint is better than original. Guess it depends on the humidity in the Mexican bean field when DC painted it #ad
. I am concerned about warranty down the road and how to prove that paint is defective.

I have a solid black 2001. I noticed paint chips around the rear doors and behind the rear wheeels with only 1000 miles. The dealer even told me that Dodge uses cheap paint. He did agree to re-paint the truck, however. A customer saved.

If we did do a class action suit, we would get to "discover" any and all documents that DC has regarding their paint. I'm guessing they have internal memos etc, showing that they are aware of the problem and that it would cost too much to correct. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your point of view, I have yet to hear of anyone's life being at risk because of a paint job.

On the otherhand, it would show that they are aware of a factory defect and ought to be liable for correcting it. Not a $2 part, so DC would kick and scream before fixing their mistake.

With the Duramax coming out, DC you should be taking better care of your current and most likely to repeat customers!

Well guys, it appears that DC hasn't got their proverbial tails in gear yet...
The paint on my 97 will chip if I even look at it wrong!! It's sad to see that things haven't changed in three plus years. Mine is
all black and this is the ONLY ***** I've got with DC!!!!! BAD PAINT and CLEAR COAT!!!!!

Hmmmm, maybe it's not bad paint but just the fact that the paint can't hold on with the shear acceleration the Cummins puts out... . Food for thought... ... ... ... .

Like, G. M. and Ford don't have paint problems? Good grief, man, wake up and look, around! Your friendly EPA banned good paint twenty years ago! NOBODY is applying paint that can outlast the onslaught of bureaucracy! Next time try a Yugo! They have a great site. ?

Ron. . all we are trying to say is when you pay 30 plus thousand for a truck not to get a scuff and shoot paint job. My rockers are hammered after a mere 9200 miles... I Agree with the above posts, If you look at my paint it sratches. One thing that helps is the proper towel for drying the truck. I was recommded to use Cannon or Fieldcrest, and only white. I am a perfectionist and wished I never ordered the Maaco Black from Dodge and thinking or trading in or selling mine as soon as I can. Dodge. . wake up and smell the clear coat..... JB

Crybabies? not me... Sure, the whining about this or that on this site gets monotonous at times, but most of us are justified. For your information, I HAVE had BETTER paint jobs on other vehicles, most notably my black 94 Ford 4x4 F150. Man was that a good truck. I've seen better black paint from Earl Scheib and Maaco. My truck was built in St. Louis, so it's not like I can blame Tico and his buddies south of the border for spilling their Corona beer in the paint vats.

This is where we should all hope a little of Mercedes does indeed rub off on the Chrysler group. If you have ever seen a black Mercedes S-class, then you know what I am talking about. Even with the low-VOC paint, the process is the issue. It's why a body shop can use the exact same paint the factory does, and have it look 10 times better.

Count me in on any class action suit concerning paint. My previous 93'Dodge Van had the same s^%$&y paint that this truck has! Only about 23K in price difference.

My truck hasn't come in yet, so I can't comment on my paint job.

Has anyone looked into getting Armourfend for their truck? I'm amazed I've yet to hear it mentioned. It's very much like the sheeting that people put on their headlights to avoid them chipping, and from what I hear it's not too expensive. I've seen several Porsches with it, and it seems to do a pretty good job. They have a web site, I think it's www.armourfendamerica.com

Not that this would excuse DC's poor paint job, though...

Dave

I'll stick to my original evaluation of you guys who always find something to whine about. The (your) EPA killed good paint jobs twenty years ago. For everybody in the U. S. car business. Mercedes are painted in GERMANY! Last Fall, some guy was complaining about the rust film showing on his stainless rocker trim. The manufacturer states very clearly that road salt or other ice melt chemicals can cause the trim to show rust. YOU GOTTA GET OFF YOUR ASSES AND CARE FOR YOUR TRUCKS TRIM AND PAINT! Wax on, wax off. My St. Louis built truck has a quality paint job, in every respect: color, lack of orangepeel and brilliance. I also have the pride and desire to keep it that way: I wax it!

Ol Ron, I doubt you eash/wax as much as Briar. I have never seen that truck with more than a weeek since a wax job. If anything, those blisters were caused by too much waxing, not too litle. LOL I've got to wonder about stainless rocker panels rusting. I thought stainless ment they wouldnt rust. Or at lest the aloy used in rocker pannels. Also, if the truck is made in Mexico, does it hafta comply to the EPA paint natzi's. Since its in a diffrent country, I doubt it. DC must use the same process in St and Mex.

Class Action Lawsuits cost money! Call your local TV News Department, they love to do investigative reporting. Mention the Steering Wandering issue also! With Ford/Firestone in the news it's a good time to hit DC.

Thanks for sticking up for me, Jff24Gordn. Actually, I do try to wax it once every month...
ol ron, living up in Montana where you do, I hope they use lots of salt on the roads this year. Then we'll see who's whining.
Some of us would term it "venting"... I had to blow off steam somehow. I'm actually glad this is about the only trouble I've had with my truck, I've posted positive comments elsewhere on this forum, about other things and my real friends know I'm not a whiner...
I don't intend to argue this point with you any further.
It is an unfortunate side effect of bulletin board forums such as this one that it's so one-dimensional, and a true picture of the person's personality, moods, attitudes, and meaning are lost... .

Briar> There are some different thngs listed under my post on armored trucks to protect some areas of the truck. I have ordered NW custom rocker panels and may lin-x some areas in addition. I have never had a vehicle repainted I geuss if they know what theyre doing it would be okay. I geuss we just have to BOMB the out side just like the inside!
