The EGTs I had with the 370s is about what I have with the DDP4s.

Have you advanced the timing yet? Wayne and I did mine, and the EGTs came down 150*. 14* stock. 16. 2 now.

A better turbo would help, too. I didn't have enough air with the PDR 40 towing. Haven't had a chance to tow at highway speeds with the new turbo, but at low speeds towing 12-15k, I don't have any EGT issues as long as the engine doesn't get lugged at low RPMs.

My timing is still stock, so I guess having it advanced would be a plus. I would just like to clean up the smoke a little that the 370 put out, but without loosing any power. The DDP4s seem to be the 370's equivlent with the correct spray pattern. I'm not looking to race anyone or smoke the tires, I'm just looking for the best towing configuration I can afford (can't afford a new turbo). My other issue is keeping the rust monster from completely eating the truck up ... a loosing battle at this point.

FATCAT,

Save your money , stay with the 3's and just advance the timing.

Then a little free pump mods will be better for your turbo till you can get a bigger on.

Sorry but that takes an EDM machine to do that and they don't have one, there injectors are honed.

If you want to make a 370 work better raise the pop pressures to 4200-4400 and the will clean up a bit. Stock pressures are 3800!

Advancing the timing won't clean up the smoke. It will actually do the opposite. You need more air. A 62/14 would probably be about right.

The 40 just ain't enough. Bumping the timing will help on power though. Make the throttle more responsive. Tightening the AFC spring will help the bottom end smoke.

The DDP4s seem to be the 370's equivalent with the correct spray pattern.

No comparison at all, in my book. They aren't in the same league. Also, the 4s are rated at ~40hp more than a set of 370s. I think a set of DDP3 would be a good choice. About the same power, but cleaner and have the correct spray pattern. EGTs should come down a tad as well.

Goodness Bryan, this is an old topic. I was reading the first post, and thought, hmm, my brother has had Bryan's 370's for quite a while. :-laf In fact they are still in the truck he wrecked last fall:eek:. He just got around to switching the auto out of his 'new' 96, for his old NV4500. The injectors I'm sure will soon follow. :D

Actually I just got it after all these years! It took some cleaning up but I'm liking it. Brady turned me on to a few tips like an ultrasonic cleaner.

Jim,

You can't just throw out that jewelery cleaner without an explanation. ;)

Does the lady know you are doing that with her cleaner?#@$%!

Thanks,

OK, then I will look at a set of DDP3's (less expensive then the 4's). A new turbo is not in the cards ... just don't have the funds to justify it. Will advancing the timing do anything to the cylinder presure or increase the cylinder temp. ? I have just about 250k miles and the factory head gasket, so I don't want any problems with boost presure.

I do have my AFC spring full forward and the #10 plate just about full forward, I don't want to have to make any adjustments to them to reduce power. Hopfully the 3's will be less smoke.

I have 220k miles, and so far, no problems with the stock gasket. I think I need to have the P pump checked out though.

Since I pretty much live in the KW anymore, I haven't towed really at highway speeds with my setup to tell how the stock gasket will take it long term. Advancing the timing does increase the cylinder pressure.

Do some reading- Diesel Timing

I bought my 4s when they had a sale on them. Got them for only $50 more than the 3s. :D Sinal73 got in on a sale after I did, for the same money.

The DDP4's gave me 27hp over the 370's. But they burn way cleaner, and EGT's are about the same, if not a little less.

I never dyno'd before or after the install, so that is why I said "rated at". Just depend on the setup.

The seat of the pants sure felt like more than 27hp, though. Feels even stronger with the new turbo. Been wanting to hit the rollers again. Still need to get a 3k GSK first. Run out of RPMs fast. Put down a best of 363/793 at IRP '06, with the PDR 40. I know there is more there.

Jim-

You'd probably still have your truck, but might be half as fast. :-laf

Fatcat,

I have my old DD III's in the classifieds. See the write-up for full details.

EDIT: Replacing 370's w/ DD III's may not be worth the time & effort. I think the III's may be a little cleaner.

Jim,

Yes you are married to the truck, but you could have a girl around the corner.

Besides, my bride loves my truck, although the screams of joy are my interpretation. :-laf

Good luck in Utah!!Oo.

FatCat,

It would be wise to drop in those studs before you upgrade anything else. :{

It would pay for itself with less $$$ going out the window. Just remember LOTS of moly lube is needed, not just that little small package they give you in the kit. E-mail me for help.
