I've had in the plans to upgrade the turbo. Just been waiting for the funds to catch up. I'm sort of thinking of whether or not it would be worth it though.



I can't tell a whole lot of difference between level 3 and 5. I've thought for a while now that it's because I don't have enough cool air to mix with the fuel on level 5. I know most of you would say thats a given with the HY, BUT



My Specs:

Alt 950ft, WOT on 5-5, 38psi boost, 9psi fuel and 1450deg max egt. I tow and haul light loads sometimes, but have never had a problem with EGTs.



After looking at the DD HP graph on their website, I'm not so sure I should be seeing THAT much more power from 3 to 5, it seems to be the same if not less than the jump from 2 to 3.



The majority of the reason to upgrade a turbo is to get the EGTs down, right? The other portion is to get more volume of usable air/fuel into the cylinder.



If I am not having a problem with high EGTs with the HY, would it be worth 800 to 1600 bucks in order to get another (I'm guessing) 40-60hp.



Or am I way off.
 
At least getting a larger exhaust housing would reduce your drive pressure.

Other then that, I will wait for other's to chime in with their experience.
 
Unfortunately you can't get a larger housing for the hy35 turbo.

Also the Hy35 is rated about a maximum of 28 psi for efficiency. Anything above that will superheat the air and not cause any drop in EGT's. I would adjust the turnbuckle a little bit if I were you.



I had at one point the same setup (with the HY turbo) With my Comp on 3X5 I could hit 1400 for my EGT's easy. Instead of going to a HX40 or a B1 I went with a PDR HX35 w/ a 14cm housing. With my larger tires, and my 3. 54 gearing, any bigger turbo would have caused a HUGE lag.



I'ts an improvement over the Hy35 and not as expensive as a HX40.



When and if I get new gearing for my rig I will go to a larger turbo but right now this works well.

I went with the same as Mac but I got a big increase in EGT's about 150-200 at 70mph. 800 at 70 with hx, and 600 at 70 with hy. Kind of dissapointed. I live at sea level also. I only get 20lbs boost out of my PDR Hx35 where I got 32 out of my hy. I plan to mess with the boost elbow to get some more boost. I keep my box on 2-3 for now until I finish my transmission swap. Spool up is about the same. I don't feel I gained much yet out of my bigger turbo but time will tell, I towing will also make a difference.
 
mediccummin - there is something wrong with your set up... you should be getting more boost. Sounds like a wastegate problem or a leaky boot somewhere.



When I started bombing I had RV275 injectors and a Power Edge box (edges first fueling box) my egts would peak at 1500 degs plus with 45 psi on the little HY.

I then went to DD3's and a PDRHX35-12 and the power edge box with an ex stacked on top of it (basically a Comp). My max EGT's droped to about 1400 with the boxes on kill and this was with 35 psi boost.

Then I went with a PDRHX40 and Edge Drag Comp. In the summer when the air is warm (70 deg's) my max egt is 1350 with the comp on 5x5 (massive fueling) with a max boost of 38 psi.



The truck seems faster with the HX40 vs the 35 and way faster than the HY. I have heard that the difference is about 30 hp or so but I guess that depends on the dyno and we don't have one in Alaska that will let me run.



If I where you I would go with at least the PDRHX35 or one of the dodgezill hybrids. I don't care for the B1, but I have only ridden in one truck that had one.

I plan to check it out again but so far have not been able to find a leak. Piers said that they set there hx35 at 24 lbs and no higher. But when I bought it they asked what boost i wanted it set at and I asked for 36. Not sure whats going on here. Thanks... .
