I bought a friggin' stick because I had read about certain problems with the Cummins overpowering the automatic and frying the transmission. I thought I was safe, but I was wrong.

Driving home from work this morning, I was cruising at about 65 in 6th, when I heard a loud clunk, lost juice, followed by a high pitched rubbing sound. The sound went away whenever I pushed in the clutch, so I figured that I had fried the clutch. I nursed my baby down to the local Dodge dealer, and took the mechanic for a ride. He said that it was not a clutch problem, but that my 6th gear had fried, needing a replace. I guess that was good news in a way, because at least the transmission is under warranty and the repairs are covered.

I'm pretty bent, and just found out that I'm without wheels for the next five days! So Puff, JNutter, if you see some guy standing on the corner wearing a Cummins hat with his thumb out, how about helping a brother out when he's down on his luck?

A wise old man in Waco once told me; "son, if it's got tit's or tires on it, sooner or later you are going to have trouble with it". I've never forgotten that... ... .

ReggieRam:

Sorry to hear about your trouble. As I understand it, the early 6 speeds were "no-repair" and only a "replace". The dealer should be in practice replacing these trasmissions #ad
Hopefully you won't be down the full 5 days. Tell us, what were your shifting habits, bombed (the truck, not you #ad
) extent (not counting the K&N), mileage, 4 wheeling, etc. Just curious if the rest of us may be experiencing the same thing with your type of set up. We'll keep a good thought for you #ad

Just curious if I need to worry about my
2000 6 speed? So far, I've got 42,000 miles and no problems. I installed the DD1 and PS boost module at 40,000 miles so that is not a real good comparison.

I have slightly over 30,000 miles on my 1999. 5 6-Speed and have had no problems, so far. It is about as early a 6-Speed as you could get in one of the Dodge's.

Sorry to hear you had problems and hope DC fixes you up with a good one this time.

Nutter, I took it to Zangara since that's where I bought it and because they were open early on Saturday AM.

I was pretty surprised at the death of my transmission, definitely not due to my shifting habits. I take it pretty easy most of the time, with the occasional hard take-offs when I need to impress. The truck only has 31K miles on it, and not too much of that in 4x4.

The thing's not BOMB'd at all, which is a good thing at this point. Both the dealer and mechanic kind of gave me that look when they started talking about a lot of guys going with "those funny black boxes" having transmission problems. I told them that I'd never heard of those things.

I appreciate the sympathy of you guys. It gave out with no warning, so good luck to y'all. I hope mine was not the norm, which I doubt if it was.

Big bummer.

I hope Zangara treats you well. I bought mine from them too. They were always good when I needed service on my V10. Sounds like they immediately started the BOMB accusations/implications.

If you start having withdrawals, come on over, we can hook up my Jeep and trailer and go pull some hills.
