dropped my 99 off at cummings today told them about my dead pedal and that auto zone came up with 216 code cummings said throwing 238 code said its the vp44 they want 2600 dollars to replace seems a little high and the code dont seem right what do you guys think thanks

Well at least they diagnosed the issue correctly... . But the $2600 replacement is way out of line. A good VP can be purchased for under $1100 and as mentioned above adding a FASS or equivalent will help ensure its life.

Actually the p0238 is: P0238 (M) Map Sensor Voltage Too High MAP sensor voltage input above the maximum acceptable voltage.

The P0216 is: P0216 (M) Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure High fuel supply restriction, low fuel pressure or possible wrong or incorrectly installed pump keyway.

The 0216 is the issue with your pump... .

Bigdaddy,

Save your self some dough, rebuilt injections pump runs $1049 from Midwest Injectionhttp://www.mwfi.com and free ground shipping to and from with a one year warranty, no core charge unless you dont return the pump within 30 days. Takes about 4-6 hours to replace. You will need new grid heater gaskets and banjo washer(if you have the factory fuel system). Might as well replace the camshaft position sensor while you have pump out it cost about $35-$40. Biggest thing to worry about is making sure the pump shaft keyway is at the 12 oclock position for removal and installation otherwise you could lose the shaft key into the timing gear cover and create a hole lotta work for yourself. Replace your lift pump as well to be safe and if you dont aheva fuel pressure gauge installled "get r done". There are some pretty good instructions to follow on TDR just do a search for vp-44 and read on...

Dave:)

Last week I bought a VP for about $1200 and paid $300 for a local diesel mechanic to install it. I installed a HPFP FASS myself, about $400. I called every dealer, Semi-truck dealer, repair shop in middle Tenn. before I bought anything.
