JNutter, thanks for your e-mail a couple weeks ago.

Just got back from Thanksgiving trip w/30' Nomad and need to report some results.

First off, my truck is stock (for now) except for the JRE 4" exhaust which sounds good but will resonate your filling out under load.

After reading the origional post and mail from Jack, I thought I would try a different approach. I went to my NAPA dealer and bought 6ea. 4" muffler clamps. I have only used 4 of them so far. The first is on the turbo pipe on the part parallel to the ground. The next three are space out between the cross member and the muffler (quad cab). All I did was put the clamps on the pipe and tighten them down. This alone took care of 80+% of the problem. I can't tell you what a difference it made. I have some other modifications to try and will report the results.

Glad it helped
In compairing the after market exhaust, the stockpipe is a heavier gauge and an extremly hard steel. I think that the very hard alloy steel and heavier gauge is the key to eliminating the pipe skin expansion with the exhaust noise pulses that is present with the soft steel lighter gauge aftermarket tubing.
Just my opinion---- #ad

Guest00,

Is it the resonance or the exhaust noise from the tailpipe that's the problem? Or both?

Mine has the drone & had the tailpipe noise. I fixed that by routing it straight out the back & putting a chrome turn down on it. You can't believe the difference!! ;)

4" resonator worked for me......

I have a Jardine with the drone problem. I had them send me a 4" resonator and it cured the problem right up. I had all my joints welded also. I don't recommend this as it was a pain in the a$$ to get it apart to put the resonator on. I used the strap clamps this time also. No dimples in pipes and seal up great. Got em at a trucking shop for big rigs.

As for the drone it's worse on the long wheel base trucks. Mostly because of that large length of pipe.

My theory would be to mount the muffler as far forward as possible to combat the drone. Thats where you would mount the resonator anyway so it doesn't really get in the way. A round muffler would go pretty far up. If anyone with the drone problem can still get their system apart I would try that first.

Since I started this thread, I guess I should put it to bed.

Conclusion: on or about the 8th of May 2002 I had Stan at Stans Headers install a Donaldson 4" x 10" x 40" muffler.

End of drone --Oo. Oo. -- PERIOD. It is so quiet at all engine speeds while towing ( 1900 - 3000 )that you can have a conversation at normal voice levels. Now I do not have an excuse for not listening to what the better half is saying:( : ie. How come you did not replace the muffler sooner!! repeatedly for the 2200 miles home last week . The engine growl is now the only audible sound while asending grades but the cab noise does not increase with engine speed and is actually quieter as engine rpms increase above 2000

I aso found out that my 4x4 was not locked in and the transfer case was in 4x hi for the preceeding 2500+ miles, I could hear the unusual ( very low volume hum ) drive train noise, checked the position of the transfer case lever and found it in 4 hi, moved it to 2 hi and the noise quit. I was never able to hear the xfer case or many other subtle noises now audable when the truck was stock. :D Oo. Oo. Oo.

Thanks Stan !!!!

EDIT: Boost has dropped from 34# to 30# max and ex temps never exceeded 1200* on the return trip, they would level out at 1200 on the long grades at 75 mph.

The axle never locked so the light never came on. I have not had a chance to trouble shoot the 4x yet.

It was a pain while in the some gost towns in Montana on the way home last week as it was rain and snow with no 4x4,
