Just got back into town and picked the truck up from dealer. It sat all weekend there. I got in and drove off... AND all my PROBS. are gone. The truck runs fine. Dodge just diagnosed the prob. as in the transmission and didn't touch it. I've been driving it now for an hour w/no probs.

You think it just went away for a while, or what? Should I still take it to the transmission shop?

Spoke too soon, truck just took a big *****!!! I was at the light and it idled low again, next it started cackling and knocking bad, and barreling out white smoke. So I accelerated gently into the Gas Station and called for a tow.

Should I take it back to Dodge for another diagnostic (free this time). Or go straight to the Diesel Shop down here?

Wierd, doesn't sound like a trann issue to me - Unless the convertor is trying to lock, and pulling down rpms - making the engine fuel to try to maintain idle rpm

That's exactly what my dealer said. Hope that's all that's wRoNg! Would it still make all those chatter-cackle noises though?

-Tow Co. just picked it up from the GS.

According to my dealer you're right TG. The TC locked up and stalled the motor. I got the truck to ADS in Chandler and they'll look at the transmission tomorrow to see if it is the TC. Also, talked to ATS today and they are gonna ship a TC direct, if ADS tells them that is what failed.

-I'll update tomorrrow on the status.

UPDATE:

It turns out now, that the Shop says it is either an internal prob. in the motor, or a dead CP3. I'd rather it be the pump though it's definately cheaper. Truck won't even start now. I'm waiting on a call back to confirm if it's in the valve train, or not.

I say its the transmission bind up/lock up... whatever. Sounds like s/m i have seen twice with 2nd gen trucks. Just a guess but dont start swapping parts on just a hunch that will burn a hole in your pocket. Remember many mechanics are part changers.

Last time i saw this they changed the p7100 then the turbo then the transmission... last one did the trick sounds like you are headed in the same direction :(

Oh man, this diagnosis is all over the map! First it's the motor, then the transmission, then back to the motor. Bottom line is you don't know what you've got wrong, Blake. Only way to find out for sure is to do a patient, careful analysis of everything. I'd start by looking at the transmission, myself, just to eliminate it first. Like Catcracker says, swapping parts is just going to put you in the poorhouse.

I would argue that a TC locking up at idle would cause all the symptoms you describe, including the loud knocking and clattering. But so would a severely messed up fuel system. Careful diagnostics will save you a ton of time and money. Finding a mechanic willing to take the time might be a little harder.
