If this happens (check engine light on) with my '05 and I bring it in for the mandatory yearly inspection it will immediately fail. If I clear the code and bring it in it will also fail inspection because there will be parameters that will not be satisfied for emission purposes... I hope DC comes up with a fix

Diesels do not have the same readiness test that gassers do :-laf

I didn't see a signature that says where you live. Here in MA there is currently no emissions test for diesel engines. Many other states don't test either.

I get code 0514 about once a month. stays on for 2 or 3 days and goes out on its own. I just ignore it.

Bob4x4, If the diesels don't have ANY readiness tests then I should be fine. But if they do even if they are different if they aren't satisfied the vehicle will fail. After resetting mine when it set the code for crank angle sensor I thought it came back saying not all parameters were satisfied.

BNH4221, My state does this test now. My '96 is exempt (for obvious reasons) but the '05 isn't. Regardless, no manufacturer should have check engine lights coming on for no reason so we can just ignore it. Try telling that to a potential buyer should you decide to sell your truck someday and the check engine light just happens to pop on. Don't get me wrong, I would rather put up with this instead of some of the problems that others are having, but they should still fix it.

Be assured D/C is working on a fix,but Tsb's go through a lot of steps before they are finaly released to the dealers. D/C is reponsible to make your truck pass any emissions test mandated by your state as long as your truck is not modified and is still covered under it's emissions warranty... ... ... . so no worries :D

Hello Everyone!! New Member here!! First time poster. I have to say this is a high quality site and TDR is AWESOME!!!!

Had the P0514 Batt Temp sensor code go off for the 4th time since new (Jan. 05). First time after a week old. Cleaned and code cleared. 2nd time after 2 weeks old. Sensor replaced. No problems until this week. Code again on Tuesday. Tightened batt post clamps - code cleared. Code again yesterday. Dealer calls STAR and answer given was... ... ... ... ...

No fix on this problem. We're working on it. Dealer apologizes for this problem and says all I can do is drive with Check engine light ON!!!! They claim there is NOTHING wrong with truck.

What is the purpose of the Check engine light then?????

I am NOT comfortable driving with light on. What happens if something really IS wrong and I would NOT know as light will always be on???

Is there going to be a fix for this problem???

Can I clear codes myself? ObviouslyI would check codes first and if only the 0514 I would clear. This would save me a trip to dealer everytime I want code cleared.

Sorry for the first postr Ramble!!

The service advisor I talked to about my truck told me not to worry about the light being on. He said if it is on and stays solid it is a type one code (not bad) , But if it starts to flash to shut the truck down immediately and call to have it towed to the dealership.

ses lights flash when the way the vehicle is running will cause damage to the catalytic converter. for example a misfire. it can cause raw fuel to be burned in the cat. probably not a problem with a diesel though. not like we can have spark plugs not doing their job. lol. but even a lean misfire will cause excessive heat in the exhaust. and raise emissions.

Just got my truck 10 days ago and only have 299 miles on it and it posted a P0514 code also. Dealer did diagnostic said needs new batt temp sensor and ordered part. :(

Oh well the honeymoon lasted 9 days.

I will post again if dealer finds out something new

Mine just popped the P0514 again yesterday. It seems to be related to when I use the block heater. Warm block, cold battery... . I think the computer gets confused! Poor programming on D/C's part... they should know that if they sell a block heater with the vehicle that this temperature difference will occur. :(

Pull your battery temp sensor out from under the drivers side battery and secure it to something close enough to tie it to(zip tie works well). We see this in Alaska quite a bit as the PCM uses the battery temp sender as a voltage reference. Do this, clear your code and let me know if it doesn't come back, this usually fixes the issue.

Did this... code went away for a few days. Came back today! Arrrgh! I "MUST" have a bad sensor.

It's too bad one couldn't just bypass this "why do you need it" sensor completely! Haven't they been charging batteries JUST FINE for decades WITHOUT knowing hoe hot or cold the battery is??

I've read of this problem since the very earliest third gens showed up and my thought is this; My truck has never, ever done this so there must be a way to fix the ones that do.

Did it again on Sunday afternoon. Anyone know the part# and price of the battery temp sensor? My truck is under warranty but its a hassle to take it in PLUS I do have the TST installed now- may not be a dealer friendly modification! :)

The TSB (18-005-06) to fix it is out on DealerConnect this morning. It is a flash for 06 trucks only. I guess we are still waiting for the earlier trucks to be corrected.

Do you have the actual wording on this TSB? Dodgeram.org (. info) used to have great TSB info posted but it hasn't been getting updated very well lately.

Cold Kali-fornia

I got that code today also (on my '05).

Last few nights have been cold for Kali-fornia - about 32 degrees.

No big deal, but since I have a trip to MT coming up - thought

I would try block heater (see if I noticed any change in starting).

Don't think I could tell - probably not cold enough.

[Have never used/tried it prior to this one time. ]

That's been about 2 days ago - got the CEL today. Cold night,

warm day. I see this is more common for the cold weather folks

to have P 0514 regularly.

But - thanks to all on the TDR for the good info!

Maybe along with a TSB for (P-0514) on the '05s,

we'll get a "fixit" for the 48re so we can use an exhaust brake!!!!!!

[Dealers sure put out a fine line of BS on that one!]

I dropped my truck off this Monday (2/20) to have this TSB performed... about 5 hours later I get a call from the dealer saying that the network connection to STAR dropped during the flash of my ECM and that it's toast! They had to order a new ECM from Denver... should be done today. HOPEFULLY!

I Never do it that way... ..... I download to the starscan on line, then download from the starscan to the vehicle. Very reliable,no toasted ECM's ... ... ... yet :D
