thanks ed

champane, what do you suggest i soak it in. the hide was tanned about 15 years ago. do i still need to soak it in something or not.

thanks,

ed

I have

I have heard all kinds of things to soak it in. If it is already tanned and sutble, I think you could just scrape it. Just like shaving. I forget the oldtimers method of soaking. Was it in Lye? Or vinegar, maybe urine? I would think someone would know. Go to Hides.com ?

I'm not sure this applies to a hide that's already been tanned but here's how an old timer showed me with a fresh hide. Soak the hide in a mix of water and deer brains (not kidding) for at least a day. Scrape the hair off with a curved blade similar to an axe head that is mounted on top of a post in the ground. Two people makes it easier. I'm not sure if the brains make the hide supple or cause the hair to fall off but was told they are an essential ingredient.

Another method would be to call a taxidermist and see how much they would charge

thanks for everybodys help. that burning thing doc. i dont know. wouldnt want to try that. kind of stinky. i almost got it all shave with clippers.

thanks again

I am not an expert but after being tanned that long the hair is probably set pretty good. You might call a taxidermist and ask for info on the subject.

Rammin, many cultures consider baldness to be a sign of intelligence.

Just looking at me and you I'd say it's true

But I've met my share of dumb baldys too...

brains

Supposedly each animal has enough brains to tan its own hide.

I've been told the oils in the brains make the hide supple and somewhat water resistant.

The Sioux here in South Dakota used to take a mouthful of brains and chew/gum it into the hide. If someone really liked you, they'd chew the hide for you.
