Here's a thought.
The new (2013) trucks now use the DEF emmissions system that allows for better performance and MPS's. I've got a 2012 with the older emmissions system. Here's my thought why couldn't a kit be made to update the older trucks to the newer system? I can't justify trading in my truck, that and I'm so up side down in my note on it, it doesn't pay to do so. However I wouldn't have an issue spending say $2000-$3000 to update my truck. The better MPG's and longer oil change intervals would pay for it self over the new 7-10 years of ownership. I want to say that there is an update for the large class 8 trucks, that or there has been a lot of new truck sales in the past year.
So... . Hey Ram you listening? any of the after market guys? How about offering a EPA approved kit for our trucks! For Ram the system already exists it's on the 2013's just have to make it a kit form with a re flash... .....
Hey just a thought...

I would consider a retrofit kit. I bought my 2012 knowing that I could have waited for a 2013. I am comfortable doing what I have to do to keep the warranty intact and just doing a DPF Delete kit after the warranty as well. Just depends on what they come up with and seems to offer the best combination of advantages.

No Class 8 updates / DEF conversions that I am aware of.

Cost would be through the roof. Too many systems would be affected.

Most Class 8 trucks have had DEF systems since the 2010 model / emissions year. That may be why you are seeing so many.

I am typing this on my wife's I pad as we sit in NW Iowa camping.
Before I retired in Jan 09 working for a large earthmoving equipment manufacture we were designing in a DEF system's to meet the emission requirements will that never happen. We started all over on the designs when it was determined to use the none DEF designs similar to the Cummins approach that was done for the 07. 5 to the12 MY trucks. The two systems are not compatible and need different engine treatments along with computer changes to the ECM for the engine. So do not look for any aftermarket attachments for the older trucks.

They won't ever do that, the cost would be in the $15,000 range, better to buy a Fiat 500 and use the Ram for hauling, and the Fiat for everything else

Except International because their infinite wisdom... thanks to assistance from Cummins Emission Systems, they are late arrivals at the "SCR/DEF party".

I bet that Cummins or Ram could make a kit happen if there was enough demand. I understand the hardware issue but I'm willing to bet that the engine computer could be re flashed. The Chassie cabs have had the system for some time so the diffrences can't be all that much.

Wishful thinking. The manufacturers are not in the retrofit kit business.

Besides that, the engineers are going to have their full time efforts dedicated to working out the glitches with the new system on new trucks.

We can't even get the revised software for the 2012 and later integrated trailer brake controller installed on the earlier trucks. Fat chance that the Ram engineering and marketing people will come up with a kit to retrofit earlier non-DEF trucks.

Hey I said it was just a thought..... I would rather keep my truck legit and not delete anything so Banks take it a s a challenge come up with something!

I had the chance to toss this retrofit kit idea to some Engineers at CUMMINS they liked the idea, said it just might be do-able. I think that if we asked for it they would make it happen. I know that there is the delete way to go with a tuner to get better MPG's and performance, but with this idea I would have to skirt the inspection issues. I don't want to break the law, I'm all for cleaning up the enveriorment just don't like the of having poor performance and higher operating costs. The 2013 trucks provide better MPG's and lower operating costs. if they could up fit my 2012 to the 2013 system I would do it in a heartbeat. Hey Mr. Patton lets see if we can make this happen, we'd all benefit from it.

Nice idea but the reality is neither Cummins or Ram will have any interest in doing this. There is no financial benefit to them.
The Dollar figure would be astronomical to engineer, them it would have to be certified.
Back in 95 Cummins came up with a 230hp up-rate kit for our pick-ups. Irrc it was about 2300$ fro Cummins and about 4k from Dodge dealers it consisted of a reman pump, reman injectors, and a wastegate actuator. No engineering was required. The system used calibrations from existing cpl

It'll never happen. OEMs are not in the business of retrofitting previous year models to duplicate new models, they're in the business of selling new products.

I'm sure a dealer will be happy to take a dpf truck in on trade for a new def truck. Bring money.

Tried my Dad's 12 controller in my 11 and did not make any difference that is why I have a MaxBrake now!
