Defective Water Pump?

Hi,

May I once again impose on all you knowledgeable owners of this marvelous machine?

I have a 2017 2500 RAM that I just purchased with 41,000 miles on it. I've been reading about the issue with water pump failures and not sure I have a defective water pump or not. While it's not leaking, I'd rather change it before failure - either have the dealer perform the repair while still in warranty, or change it myself.

After researching the vehicle service history that I got with the truck, the water pump has never been changed, or at least inspected. From what I've read, if I have a vent hole in the casting at the 11 o'clock position it is a good pump. I looked at the water pump itself and am not seeing one. Is the information that I read about the vent hole accurate, or are there any other distinguishing features between a good pump and a bad pump?

The pump casting itself has this part number stamped into it: 4S1021/01. The pulley on the pump appears to have a large AC stamped into it. Does this provide a clue?

I've attached a photo of the installed pump.

Does this provide any insight?

It appears that you have the OMP, with the shaft that extends a little past the pulley, which is not part of the recall. Look at pictures in post #42 here.

Will Mark I don't think your water pump is defective. I am on my original water pump at 135K miles and a 12 year old truck. I never have inspected the pump nor looked for the weep hole in the pump. If the pump starts to weep than I will replace the pump, if it is like other water pumps they fail very very very slowly. So I will replace the pump when it fails.

I just follow the maintenance schedule for our trucks, that's all that is needed.

IF yours has the weep hole it will fail slowly as Jim said, If it doesn't like mine at 17k, it will just go without warning. 17k miles, no signs of coolants leaks or the pump being bad and then BAM, driving to my girlfriend's (now wife) lost the water pump on the highway at 70mph so i lost power steering as well and only had a little bit of brake. thank goodness for the exhaust brake.

Its a 30 minute job to remove, replace and refill so I'd have it changed if your that worried about it. You can get a replacement at Autozone or O'Reilly and then keep that one as a core when you need another one. I always have a spare at my dad's If i need it. Just pull the air filter box out. Use a 10mm socket and short extension and obviously a breaker bar on the tensioner.

Mark, keep asking questions that is the only way you will know what is going on with your truck.

Most of us were knew to the Cummins engine or diesel engines at one time or another. This is the only way you will learn!
