More GCVWR Wonder Why?

Looking for 30 MPG..........

My father is about three months away from retirement, and looking at different post retirement employment options. I told him about some of you on this board that deliver RV's for a living. He sounded interested and asked for info. I would greatly appreciate any information on this subject that you guys could supply.

Thanks,

Dan

Do you get Highways or Trailer Life magazine. There are always ads in the back of the book for RV haulers. No details, just a phone number to call. If you don't have access to these books and would like the number, e-mail me.

Boy this brings up an interesting point for me. I am looking at buying a slide-in camper. Dealer told me it does not come with title and state charges sales tax on it 8. 25% so if I bought it out of state I would save 8. 25% if I had it shipped to me by common carrier. Anyone know of a place that would ship a camper?

I don't want to screw around local dealer as I preferr dealing local and would accpet the 8. 25% hicky just to deal with a local but when his price on a 2 year old new model that he has had on his lot the whole time with a screaming deal on is more than a new custom ordered one from dealer out of state my loyalty took a major hit.

new camper

eric_77, you've prolly thought of this... ... . but order the new camper, drive the goat to the factory, have 'em install it, and enjoy it on the way home... .....

camper

i'd guess many of the common carriers would deliver it to you. try contacting one which has a terminal near you. i had two big mother fiberglass tanks delivered clear across the country about two years ago. wasn't "cheap", but much less than it would have cost me to go after them. they could put it on a flat bed and bring it to the terminal, and you could pick it up from there??

Buy one and pick it up in Montana. No sales tax. Thats what I did. You probably won't even want to go back to TX.

I have been thinking of picking up a Klose BBQ in Houston. Does that mean I would have to pay TX sales Tax??

I just saw a thing on the news this morning about some guy that sells a book on how to make a living delivering RV's, here I found the info:

"How to Get Paid $30,000 a Year to Travel -- Without Selling Anything". By Craig Chilton, Daybreak guest on January 29. Call (800) 247-6553 to order.

The book lists over 3,000 RV manufacturers and dealers to contact. The guy said there are over 100,000 people in the US doing this, about 1/3 are senior citizens. This includes the motor coaches, the manufacturer gives you fuel money and money for the plane ticket home up front and after you complete the delivery they pay you a per mile fee, something to this effect anyway.

The book cost ~$30.

Hope this helps.

SLittle, had that book and threw it away. Doesn't really tell you anything new. I've learned more about it here than in that book. And it's pretty much outdated, they do a sort of update on the phone numbers every couple years, though.

I'd just go and buy the magazines {trailer life}, scan the internet and go from there.

Another cheap way to get in the biz is to deliver motorhomes. Husband and wives makes a great team. Generally they have 2 motorhomes going to the same dealer or close by. For $3500 buy a Ford Escort wagon or similar tow vehicle. Rig it up with a tow bar, lay down the back seat and put a small mattress in the back. Deliver both motorhomes. Unhook the tow car and head for home. One sleep, one drive... ... ... ..... hammer down and get 30 mpg going home!

Yep you would have to pay the tax. 8. 25% See why I am looking to get a common carrier (that is the requirement) to pick-up and deliver for me? The Montana thing wouldn't be bad as I think that is where they are made. I'll look into that. Get to spend the extra dough on a vacation.

Eric_77:

Can you just have it shipped across thet state line, and then pick it up with your truck? It would be cheaper than shipping across the country, and you'd still be able to cheat the governor. Plus, you get a trip out of it.

Mine is a 1997 S&S. Made the deal with a dealer in Billings MT and picked it up at the factory in Kalispel MT to save the shipping. I couldn't be happier with it. It has never been back to the dealer. My wife and I once slept in it 4 nights in a row at 15 to 20 below zero. Works for me. They do have them in Billings at Pierce RV. I am going to Billings tomorrow. Want me to see what they have?

There is no sales tax in Oregon. Arctic Fox is manufactured in La Grande, Or. and thwere are a couple more RV manufacturers in the state as well.

Dewdo in the other Washington

Is the sales tax being applied when you 'register' the camper? I'm assuming a slide-in is registered with the DMV somehow. If it is then the seller shouldn't be charging sales tax (for his state) - get the Manufacturers Statement of Origin (MSO) and don't register the thing in your home state until after the 90 day limit (CA rules) is exceeded. Do a search on Power Wagon for his saga about buying a truck in CA for his use in OR.

towing the big 5ers

anybody know what the mileage rate is for delivering the big 5ers? by big, i mean the 35-40 footers. i prolly could modify the rollin redneck residence to pull big 5ers. wondering whether it would be worth my time to pursue??

slidein camper

I bought a 2000 Coachman here in Pa. and paid 6% sales tx. Then I find out there is no title or plates. Never again. Next time I'll be doing the same thing Wyo Jim is recommending. I'll drive my rig to Montana buy slidein and have a good vacation on the money I save. :p :D

The mileage rate varies with different brands.

Generally you're looking at 60CPM(cents per mile) for a back haul and usuallt between 72-85CPM pulling out of most others. Tolls are usally paid on all loads and many have an additional fuel surcharge that is directly passed to the driver, this is usally worth a few cents per mile.

Preferred equipment is,

- Mimimum class3 tag hitch

- weight bars(prefferably 1000 or 1200lb)(also helps reduce flipover from wind)

-all hitch ball sizes preffered

-pintle hitch

- Fifth wheel with at least 15K capacity, higher is preffered

- gooseneck ability

- adapters for all electrical plugs

- breakaway box

- wire harness W/ alligator clips to adapt to unwired trailers

- prefferably newer model one ton pickup, 3/4 ton-ok, short bed trucks aren't as usable.

>>>You'll need a dot physical, clean MVR, and willingness to WORK.

If you are considering "ramp" trailer work the rate is generally $1. 25 a mile, some pay more depending on the haul. You NEED a 1ton DRW to safely do this kind of work. Prefferably a 50foot,102"wide,winch,center rail equipped trailer.

Ask to speak with Bob or Ben

Note: Rad Transport has the highest amount of backhauls in the bussiness, they like to run you if you want to work. If you don't make money they don't make money ,so my advice is to work hard and try to be a proffesional at all times. Good Luck!;)

rv hauling

thanx, FL70CAT. if i were to do that, i'd modify the motor home to work with. i have an 8' long room on the back with nothing in it currently the motorhome part is selfcontained in front of that. i'd have someone, (probably me) remove the box from the divider wall back, and put the appropriate hitches on it. with the C8. 3 and the allison MD3060, should make a satisfactory tow vehicle for the big boys--36' up. the engine is still stock at 275 HP, so could be turned up for as much power as the Allison could take.
