If you go to the front counter on each trip into Costco... . they'll be happy to give you another coupon book... . just say you forgot yours at home...

So, who is running Delo? Any comments welcome - no flames! ;-)

Pluses? Concerns? I thought I saw something about a question going to the C-J rating?

If its for the truck in your sig, you would need the API CJ-4 oil due to the emissions equipment. Pre 2007 can still use the API CI-4 oils. Just make sure its CJ-4 when you buy it.

The Delo is $30 for 3 gallons. Used to be $30 for 6 at Costco! I saw it was $30 again and was ready to run with 12-18 gallons of the stuff when I realized that it is only 1/2 of what it was.

I've been running Delo in both my 97 and 2006 (13 years total) and no problems. That includes around town, in very dusty conditions in the desert, and long RV pulls. I have never done a sample, but the truck keeps running. It is one of the best dino oils you can get. I do change it every 5000 miles. That reminds me... :-laf

Is there a problem with using Delo CJ on a pre 07? I have read all the negative post on the CJ vs CI, but really, how bad can it be?

george

I don't think there is an issue with CJ in pre-07 engines. From what I understand, its not as desireable as the CI rated oils. . From reading on here and other sources, the CJ rated oils can't be pushed much beyond 5K miles without causing excessive wear to an engine due to the lack of ZDP...

Personally, I have been stock-piling 5 gallon buckets of CI rated oil. When I hear that my source is depleting, I will start blending the CI and CJ oils to extend my CI supply. I gues when that runs out, I will start adding ZDP from camshaft assembly lube.

Guys, I understand all of you have your brand preference but do you know that SAE (society of automotive engineers) has a board that includes engine manufacturers, oil company reps, and others who sit on a panel and discuss the engine needs, what the oil companies can do and how to do it... .

Its the same for Clutches, Transmissions, etc...

Once the standards are set, they are published in SAE briefs, or minutes and are available to all members...

In the case of oil standards, those who are not members can purchase from the SAE web sight the briefs, or minutes and get the standards and blend their oil products to meet the standards... . and just like gasoline, they drop their magic chemical, something like a pint to 10,000 gal into the mix and their product is magic stuff.....

Because we are not engineers, nor manufacture(our business) for the OEM's we can join as associate members, attend meetings and get updates and publications at reduced rates...

I have several of their publications on my book shelf, sometime over my head... but the most informative that I've read... .

I have pretty much given up looking for CI-4 Plus. I've looked at enough auto parts store stock rooms to give up hope. I scored a few cases of Delo 400 after the switch and a few cases of Premium Blue. Now I need to figure out how much additive to add to get the mix right.

I know there are those that say that the new brew has been blessed by those on high. But I'm pessimistic enough to figure that they aren't really concerned about my truck lasting longer. They might even want to sell me more oil because of shorter change intervals and even a new truck or two.

If you are not comfortable using the CJ-4 oils, and want the CI+4 oil, Amsoil is still making it as the "Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine" oil. This oil is one of their best selling oils. You can order it directly from them and have it sent to the address you provide.

It may be time to consider synthetic again. I just have problems running the miles required to make it cash flow. If I'm changing the filter, I might as well change the oil. Don't really want to put in a bypass system. Don't really like any of the options that I have now.

CI rated oil is still readily available... Go into your local Caterpillar dealership and you can purchase it in 1 gal. , 5 gal. , or 55 gal. containers.

Its made by Mobil and is almost identical to Mobil Delvac... I THINK there might be some slight variation between the Cat and Mobil branded stuff... not sure. But I KNOW its good oil. Cat also sells the CJ stuff for the 2007 and up OHT (on highway truck)engines.

Lots of OTR dealerships, (i. e. Kenworth, Stuart and Stevenson) carry Cat and Fleetguard stuff, so you can get your oil and filters at one time.

Stewart and Stevenson an on highway CAT engine dealer? They have been Detroit Diesel and Allison for years.

If you use the "Amsoil" FULL-FLOW filter, you can goThree times (3X) OEM* recommendation, not to exceed 50,000 miles/600 hours or one year, whichever comes first on the oil, and the filters are gauranteed 25,000 mile/one year. Drain intervals may be extended further with oil analysis.

Some local Chevron distributors still carry the old formula CI4+ oil that does not meet CJ so has the older additive package. Mine has it in 5 gallon pails and 55 gallon drums.

I thought they still were... maybe that was back when they were Industrial Power???. . Now that I think about it, you may be right, they may not be working on OTR Cats anymore... Thats really bad, I pass there atleast twice a day and I can't remember seeing the Cat sign... . My memory is getting bad. hahahaha. .

I know MHC sells Cat stuff and Fleetguard stuff... And we have literally buckets and buckets of it (CI Oil)

Royal Purple here. The performance shop near me in Bellflower Ca Team Inc carries CI4+ 15-40. The manager told me they sell to all So Cal and sell tons of the stuff. I called Royal Purple and was told their sales are through the roof on the stuff, and plan on continuing it's production.

Changing oil one a year is very attractive. With the price of dino oil going up, synthetic is only a little more than double the price. I am a big fan of synthetics, just not as much in the crankcase.

I also now have some hope of finding old formula Delo or Delvac for my truck and especially the '82 Mercedes 300SD. Hate to just leak the synthetic out of the old rattler. I hope Delvac doesn't stink like Rotella. Once I figured out what the smell from my truck was, I did an early dump. :p

Delvac doesn't have the odor that Rotella has.

Before I noticed that the Shell Rotella 5-40 synthetic went to a CJ i had used for one oil change. The first thing i noticed about the stuff was that the odor was gone. If you dont mind the fact that it's a CJ rated oil I would recommend it totally. It's TBN properties are equal to other highly rated synthetics (which I wont name to avoid a oil war).

I will say this though when Royal Purple eventually goes CJ and away from CI4 Plus that will be what I use;).
