My personal preference also keeps me with higher dollar filters, but honestly straight up failures are rare, at least a lot more rare than installation error. (I am not insinuating, just making an observation). I did recently read where Amsoil bought a turbo after a air filer failure.





The more I look at your pictures and read what you said I am really thinking that it was in there upside down... .



If you did have it in correctly, then I apologize.



Nobody's air filter is going to stand that treatment because the wire mesh wouldn't be doing it's job of holding the media in place.

after looking at the pics again. . it almost looks like its a case of the crappy stock filter box not sufficiently clamping the seal all the way around the filter... . as we all know, air WILL take the path of least resistance...

to be honest, I absolutely HATE the factory air box, inless you remove the radiator overflow hose and the lid to turbo hose, its almost impossible to ensure that the filter is clamped down on all four sides,so just guess what happens at the quickie lubes and dealerships!!!!. . but I hate the open element filters as well... I DID run a BHAF on my old 89 12v... . atleast you KNEW it was sealed off...
 
Couldn't take it, had to see if one could be installed upside down.



Just went out in the yard and popped mine open.



My conclusion is yes, as long as the element did not have the foam over the pleats like the Fleetguard does. You would have to crink the corners in a little but it would go.





Forgive the dirt, it is due for a change out next week. New element on its way.
 
I just flipped over when I took the photos. It was installed correctly. If you look carefully at the direction of the bend, you can see that it is bent back on the pleats. The ire was facing up and was shoved up into the intake hose. The rubber gasket is torn where it was ripped out of place. Darndest thing I ever saw.

Fram is being very responsive and I'll be sending it in for their inspection this week. I'm pulling an oil sample to check for silica and other contaminants too.

Ok, I just had to ask. It kinda' looked like you might have, just wanted to be sure that it was in there correctly. ;)



Honeywell, the parent company of Fram has always been responsive with us and if they find that they have a problem I have no doubt that they will take ownership of the issue.
