Do I need a boost guage?

A friend of mine has a 60 series detroit in a 92 VOLVO roadtractor. He is wanting to uprate horsepower via injectors, turbo, computer, etc...

but he can't find any info on the 11. 1 liter, 350 hp engine. Does anybody know of any web sites or other places to get information and parts? TIA

Series 60

The Series 60 comes in three different sizes and several different

horsepower ratings. The 11. 1L is the low end version and doesn't

get some of the good stuff that the higher hp versions get. It also

has gone some improvements over the years and that '92 doesn't

have a lot of those improvements. The top hp that I'm aware of

is the 850 hp 14L marine version. The higher hp versions use

forged steel piston crowns where the 11. 1L uses cast iron crowns

there are things that can be done to up the hp on the 11. 1 engine

but it will cost and the reliability will go down hill fast. If he were

going to rebuiuld it he could make it a 12. 7L and put a lot of the

better stuff in it then, big bucks. I think that the top hp level from

the factory is 500 for class 8 truck version of the 12. 7L and 550

for the 14L version.

Speedo is right on! The 11. 1 didnt get the good DDEC management system. The 12. 7 is the superior engine, but also had 3 or 4 levels of DDEC depending on the model year. I seem to recall the 12. 7 going up to around 500-520hp or so. Best advice would be to tell your friend to save his $$ and just have the computer turned up a bit, and not get crazy with injectors etc... or the motor may eat itself.

My friend has a '99 KW with the 500hp 60 series. What a sweetheart of an engine! This thing averages 7. 25 mpg and pulls like a trooper. My friend always has the truck at 80,000#.

I am going to test drive a 93' Pete 379 on Monday it has the 430 HP Detroit Series 60 in it. My father and I are planning to purchase this truck to haul asphalt with a belly dump trailer. The story with the truck is 80,000 miles since an overhaul, no documentation. It has 580,000 on the odometer, I looked at it last week but did not drive it. The interior is in really nice shape, it is very clean under the hood, and no oil leaks that I can see anywhere underneath. Anything to keep an eye out for on these trucks?

Thanks
