Growing up in rural NC in the 70's you could expect to be discilplined by whomever deemed it necessary - teachers, principals, sunday school teachers, your friends parents, etc. Funny thing, despite all of the liberal crying about child abuse I know of very few of my peers that ended up being wife-beaters, child molesters, professional dancers, or such.
My folks had three rambunctious boys to deal with who, I have no doubt, deserved quite a bit more punishment than we ever received. Funny thing, the kids whose parents didn't discipline them ended up being the ones in jail due to drunk driving or worse offenses.
I truly believe that a little discipline at the right time goes a long way.
"Time out" - as a friend of mine relates - was the duration you were unconscious after you sassed Dad.
Also, whatever I got at school was alot better than what I got when I got home - ever notice how your folks knew before you got home that you had gotten a whuppin' at school?
