E250 4x4 5.9 Cummins Conversion

I am not a mechanic

I just bought a used 1998 6500 GMC and after driving it back from Kansas, that is it. That weak, 185HP 500 lb ft Cat is a sick puppy. I have 3 used ISL cores that I am taking and making one out of, and putting a 10 speed fuller real transmission behind it.

Photos as we start the install later.....

Here is the truck:

Sounds like a nice conversion project. Is it going to be a stock rebuild or uprate?

I would assume reliability is a high priority.

Is this going to be your hauler for the trailer in the back ground?

Keep us posted.

i have a 2000 f650 that HAD a 3126 cat in it,it was one weak piece of catcrap,i put a 8. 3 cummins and a 10 speed in it,its a great truck now!Randy

Dang Scott, that's going to be sweet. I allways thought the L10 would be a good mate to one of the med. duty trucks anyway. while I'd rather have a mechanical motor with the PT fuel system for simplicity, I'm sure you can make the electronic engine work, should yield better mileage too. Good luck!

oh, by the way, are you going to have it done by schied's show? it'd bee to cool to check it out on person.

I just spent the weekend tearing the 3 cores down that I had collected. THe ISL is (as stated earlier by one of our intelligent TDR readers) a 8. 9 L, roller cam, capable of taking a Jacob's JAKE BRAKE, not a exhaust brake. So far, I have every thing I need short of a crankshaft. Hmmm... back to the core pile.

Sorry, not coming to the scheid show, with all of the testing we have scheduled. We just redid the car again and want to test, but need to get the tow rig done.

Randy, we may have to take your Ford on in a race!

After the last repower, (my 1985 suburban with a ISB, VP44) I found that the electronic repowers are as easy as mechanical. And, yes, I am keeping this ISL at the 400 HP 1200 Lb/Ft rating. Think about this: Double the HP and torque of the Cat. And a real Jake. Hmmmm,,, Maybe straight pipes.....

hey Scott I know you probably have all the help you need but if you need an extra hand give me a shout at the trailer place. Erik ( I'm the guy with the 4b in the rock crawler)

a truck race! cool! i have 3. 70s,a 6610 roadranger and a 3 speed brownie behind the roadranger, under, direct and overdrive,11-22. 5 tires. it gets down the road real well! good luck with the chebbie!Randy

Hey Scott, if we ever get to an event together, we should run the tow rigs! :D Dunno if they'd let me try that, but it would be fun! We've got that FL120 Freightliner with the 370hp N-14.

If you come out to truckfest in Denver they race every thing including semis. Scott always has the dragster out here, and Cummins Rocky Mountain is a sponsor. Only bad thing is you'll have to wait for next year. Who knows maybe I'll run my International 9400 with an 435/500 hp N14, or maybe I'll just run the 4b powered rock crawler on the rock course ( if I get to working on it again ).

Hey if we're racing big trucks, I'll bring my W9 and we'll run em at 80,000. I'll even give you little Cummins fellers a weight break. lmao! That ought to make one heck of a nice hauler Scott.

we were not so little until you showed up! ha! Randy

The Repower Begins

Well, we made it to California and back, and the little CAT did OK. The Allison, what a slipper.

Here is the start of the repower. As you can see, we are a low budget operation, in the dirt.

How much longer is the ISL compaired to the 3126.

I have a 82 C70 Toter with the (peace of crap) 8. 2 turbo Detroit. I'm lookin at the 8. 3 or even an L-10 which weighs quite a bit more for a swap. \

Keep us posted Oo.

Length is the easy part, the ISL is only about a inch or two longer. It is about 2-3 inches taller, and then with the Jake, it adds another nearly 2 inches. I am going to lift the cab on the chassis a bit for more room. I am also going to drop the engine a bit when I build the mounts, as there is a ton of pan to axle clearance.

You ought to look at a C8. 3 as they are cheap and all over. The ISC Common Rail

would be cool, but hard to get cheap yet. The L10's are nearly obsolete, if you can handle that weight, go for a M11. Same weight and size, but more current.
