I used additive in every tank, and still lost injectors. All were worn badly...



Using additive does not guarantee you will not have fuel system issues.

I went to Walmart tonight and bought Power Service Diesel Kleen + Cetane Booster. $6. 84 for a 32oz bottle, enough for 100 gallons.



Now, I just need to figure out how to get it into the tank w/o spilling and also measure it correctly. I guess I will use a small funnel. Approx 12oz treats my 35 gallon tank. (actually treats 37. 5 gallons)

I bought a bunch of polyethylene bottles from eBay... you can get them in any size. They are resistant to the additives, and make using the correct dose much easier. I think a dozen cost me around $5. I used an old lunch-box sized cooler to store them in... keeps the mess in the cooler and out of the truck. Just remember that you don't drain the tank every time... I found an 8-ounce bottle was about perfect because when I typically filled up I only needed around 20 gallons.



One thing no one mentioned was the fact that today's ULSD is additized (additives already added) to counteract the loss of lubrication from refining... its already been said about the potential for over using and mixing additives to have a negative effect... what's to say your store-bought additive isn't creating a problem when added to additized fuel??? Just a thought...



Again, I used additives in every tank in this 04. 5 and had injector issues by 140k... use of additives does not guarantee you won't have injector issues.

Spash blend 2% bio. Safe bet if you buy from a reputable dealer. 40K miles on B2-B5 and I've not had seen any water in my fuel filter. I buy 5 gallons at a time and fill quart bottles (I save my empty winter-use Power Service white bottles). To be honest, mixing this stuff is a pain in the butt. I still feel it is worth the effort. If you go this route change your fuel filter a few hundred miles after you start using the bio, it cleans your fuel system. Lots of TDR posts on biodiesel. I look forward to the day when B2 is readily available retail in Cal. I read that ASTM 975 for diesel oil has been updated to include bio blends up to B5. Maybe this will help.
 
Power Service changed there blends for ULSD. . I would not speculate that it lubricates any better then the old product without testing.



LR, that is a good ratio 12oz to full tank. I would sometimes go with 16oz to full tank just to keep measuring to a minimum. (hint 1 bottle is 32oz)



I use liberal amounts of superteck 2cycle oil in me tank... . The injectors are really quite,,,shhhhhhh cant here em.

For your information, ALL Diesel Fuel Additives had to be re-formulated to conform with the ULSD fuel. There may be some Fuel Additives on the shelves that have not been re-formulated, so one could have issues.

But that still doesn't mean the ULSD formulas will play nicely with the additives included in the fuel at the rack.



All that reformulation was meant to do was to ensure the additive wasn't changing the fuel's characteristics to something that would damage the emissions equipment on the newer trucks.

What I'm trying to say Steve, is ALL the "after-market" Diesel Fuel additives went through many "changes" to be able to be used in the ULSD fuel.
 
I really like Stanadyne for a fuel additive. Saw a 2-3 consistent increase in mpg as soon as I started using it. I use amsoil in my engine (with the amsoil filter) and transmission/t-case.
 
No additive under EPA controlled testing (or mythbusters, for that matter) has EVER shown an INCREASE in mileage. They MAY restore lost mileage by cleaning the fuel system/injectors, but they will not increase fuel mileage over what otherwise is attainable by a proper running engine. All additives have lower BTU's than the fuel they are replacing, thereby lower efficiency other than the potential of cleaning and restoring power and efficiency to a dirty fuel system.



That being said, additives do have their use as anti-gel, biocide, and/or may hold a benefit (bio, in particular) for lubricating properties. As you can see by the study posted previously in this thread, most of the name brand products do not have the lubricating properties to make a material difference.

Yep. I've run a number of additives and never seen an increase in mpg. Every three tanks now I'll throw some PS or Stanadyne in there for medicinal purposes. I'm 18 miles from a real additive: LSD Mexican fuel.
 
Cummins Valvoline SynPower Diesel Injection Cleaner/Lube



This stuff works great. My truck was running rough in first gear at take off, kind of sputtering a little. I thought it might be a dirty injector... sure enough, bought a bottle and it cleared up the problem after only about 50 miles. Excellent product!
 
130,000 Miles and no problems with no additives

My 2004 6sp quad 4x4 has run beautifully for 130,000 miles with absolutely no problems of any kind not even a burned out bulb, there was one u-joint issue but that’s expected. I have never used any type of additive in the truck at all. I do use Mobil 1 turbo diesel every 5,000 miles and change the fuel / air filter every 10,000 on the 10s.



Have I been just lucky, I don’t think so that’s why I bought the truck. My best friend had a gen 1 with 500k on it when he traded up for a gen 2 truck

We build some equipment for places that use jet fuel and what is recommended by Cummins is a 3 micron spin on filter that contains an additive to lubricate their system. FS20000 filter is good for 250 hours or standard oil change intervals. I have installed this system on my 06 truck for peace of mind and the extra filtration. You can view the system on the fleetguard site. Replacement elements are around $20 but saves me alot of trouble and cost buying and adding additives.
