Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) ATF+4 Question?

I've been noticing a strong diesel smell for several weeks. Last night, it had gotten much worse. I looked under the truck and the entire undercarriage is covered in diesel fuel!

I opened the hood and took a look-see. It was dark but it appeared that the area around the lift pump and the pump itself was covered in fuel. Oh boy, are we having fun now!?! Good thing I haven't done any power mods yet; just a pacbrake.

Diesel fuel on the under carriage

Check you FO filter drain valve, you may have to excersize it a few times, I did a FO filter change last year and the drain valve did not seat real well and sprayed Fuel all under my truck. There is a TSB about it as well. Hopefully this is your problem and its a simple one at that.

Thanks for the tip Dave. I'll check it.

Sometimes what looks like a big problem turns out to be just a little thing. :)

You might also check the gasket on the fuel filter lid... . any crack in it and it will spray fuel out. Had this happen to me after dealer changed out my lift pump.

Check the nuts that connect the fuel lines to the vp44. An end wrench is the best way to get to them. I had the same problem, which was fixed by simply tightening one of these nuts.

sheepish grin> :)

Well, I found the culprit: the fitting coming off the fuel filter housing that will feed my fuel gauge was leaking. (Haven't finished the install yet).

Guess a little more sealant is in order!

Thanks for the help guys. I can always count on TDR members!

Wish that was my problem. Running the Appalachuns again, came through the second tunnel I-77E something blew. I checked the radiator, two gallons low on coolant, filled it up and drove away. Bad racket and vibration, shut it down along side of highway. Had one of those Kampmaster toyhaulers hooked. Called another hauler friend to see how close he was, knew he was running East also. Wasn't too far, about 300 miles but he was on his way to deliver a load of trailers. Thought he could be my location by 6 or 8 in the evening. He'd been running hard, I figured best thing I could do was get some sleep so I could drive after we hooked my trailer on his truck. He went a hunnert miles the wrong way, course then you gotta come back the same. Finally showed up a 6 in the morning, we delivered my trailer 140 miles and back. Hooked my broke truck to a tow chain and he drug me into the TA, we winched the truck on his wedge and he climbed in the back seat and I drove with his mutt barking at every toll booth. He forgot to pay for the fuel, remembered 60 miles later, we called, they said they had already turned it in to the highway patrol and we couldn't give them a card number over the phone, had to drive back to the TA. Dropped the trailer, returned and paid. Drive back to the trailer, dark now, harder to hook in the dark. He ended up dropping the trailer off the fiver hitch and on his flatbed. Bottle jacked it up so we could hook up. Trucks back at Angola DOC, Dave's Diesel, he thinks the head gasket failed leaked water into someplace water shouldn't be. Ford F350 hadn't sold so I running trailer with it now. All this to tell you my Ford is nowhere near the hauler my Ram is, course it's running, Ram ain't. Got a load going to Aurora, CO. . . Momma here I come. The Saga continues.

MAJOR BUMMER Steve!!!

:--)

My minor problem pales in comparison. I hope everything gets fixed and you have twice as much good fortune as you had bad luck!

Take care.

Gary, thanks for the good wishes. When my truck was getting underside coated with oil my vacuum pump seal was leaking. Dealer and almost everybody else wanted to replace the whole pump at some humungus cost. A $15 dollar seal fixed the problem and if I'd checked this board sooner I could have gotten the seal for $2 bucks. Just goes to show it pays to read TDR early and avoid outrageous charges.

Cheers,

Steve J.
