At which point they would be out of business selling for less than the cost of the product. There is NO big margin of fuel prices at the pump, it changes load by load and if they are lucky pays the electric bill to pump and advertise it. If its cheaper than high volume stations it is due to 2 reasons; the fuel is older delivery and has been there a while, or, it is cut rate beginning\end of the pipeline run with questionable quality.
This is so funny.............. :-laf

Given the potential ridiculously expensive repair bills for any hpcr fuel system, do you realllllllllllllly think a local retailer is going to chance selling sub-standard fuel for a measly few cents per gallon profit?

The ONLY time I elect to use loves/pilot/flying j/speedway truck lanes is when I have a haul that generally limits me to those lanes OR if I need DEF as well. Their higher priced fuel is higher priced to cover the artificial discounts they claim they give large trucking companies as well as cover that expensive real estate where the trucks park.

Through 356k miles......my Radio Flyer has ran just fine on less expensive fuel found a few miles away from the interstate as Newsa explained.

Greg ol' boy......this is not always a safe assumption.....In my younger days, I was a bean counter, doing the books for quite a few gas stations. Next time we have lunch, I have a few stories to tell you about gas station owners....there are some really good reputable ones......and some others, not so much.....:-laf

Even at that.....in the event of substandard fuel not caused by underground tank issues, the claim is basically handled by the fuel wholesaler.

Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....Applebees :-laf

.

Good point. The realestate along the interstate and the size of their lots. I thought about the cost of the real estate along the interstate being more, but didn't mention it.

But the size of the lots also.... didn't think about that. So Greg said it better, as usual.

Even funnier, you asking that question. :-laf:-laf

You are deluding yourself if you don't think this happens day in day out, coast to coast, and border to border. All it take is ONE time and the point gets rammed home, in the wallet where it hurts the worst.

I worked for an industrial contractor hanging iron for 13+ years, the owner also owned a fuel station. Primary business was (and still is) agriculture, home heating oil and local tractor trailer owners as it is off the main highway and off the beaten path for interstate traffic. From the talks we had over the years I definitely agree there is not much money being made at the pump, with that said they are ALWAYS cheaper than any of the truck stop stations along rt 90. There are 2 Loves, a Flying J, and a TA all within a 10 mile stretch. The truck stops are consistently 10 to 20 cents a gallon higher regardless of whether prices go up, down, or stay the same. Hard to believe that's for any other reason than having to pay the bills for the Wally world type stop n shop/****/shower/shave services offered there.
