P-30 4bt ???

Hey guys- Just wondering if you all saw the artical in teh Diesel Power mag this month (not a fan of the magazine its self) but this time I think it may have paid for my subscription!!!!

In it there is a 5. 9 swap into a 93 GMC. Half way thru the artical it was talking about running the mechanical fan or going with electrices and said that space is an issue with the GMC when trying to run the intercooler (that is a big problem for me right now... I need an extra 3/4") Anyway, it showed a pic of the braket/pulley that the fan screws to. It showed a 89-93 unit and then a 94+ piece. It said that the 89-93 was 1 1/2" shorter and that gave the needed clearance!!!

Does anyone know anything about this? looking at the pic I could see it no problem but are the other brakets different also? or do I just have to get the 89-93 fan also and clutch?

Any help on this would be great!!!!

Thanks again... RyanB

Change that, change AC & Alt

Yes,

I had looked into other mounts, but to change the bracket, the alternator (EZ to do) and AC mount have to be changed, or your serpentine is off.

Changing the AC is not easy.

My solution, when I figure what intercooler I will plumb in next, will be the Horton EC-450 and fan solution. Meanwhile I am running a 18" flex-o-lite full time fan on the screw on OEM mount.

Well, thats the thing... . from that picture it looked like the distance from the block to the pulley is the exact same on both units... the only thing that was different was that the 94+ had a huge "nose" sort of speak sticking out from there. It also mentioned in the artical about when dodge put the cummins in the 89-93 trucks it was basicaly a manufacture conversion and I am wondering if they ran into the same thing I am now back then with finding room.

Ryan,

That is my truck and you are correct. the pulley is in the same spot so it was a bolt in application. However the belt did get shorter, due to the fact that it moved the fan to the pass side a little bit.

The new guy at diesel power is an great guy, he is one of the of us, so give it a couple of more issues and I think David will have the rag so that everyone will like it.

Let me get this Clear

Work with me. Are you both saying that if I use this older fan pulley mount, that I could get an extra 1. 5" and therefore could run the OEM Dodge Cummins fan with clutch? (which I have on hand)

I am very interested. Does anyone have pictures, or part numbers?

Every Dodge dealer I go to, becomes elementary ignorant when I ask for Dodge Cummins parts, wanting serial number of truck. And several times, I still get the wrong part. Just want you to understand my reluctance and why I ask these questions.

Yeah, I am interested in this.

If you pic up the newest issue of Diesel power you will see the picture! I my self am going to the local dodge wrecker this week to get the pulley/bracket and fan (if the fan is different than mine!)

BMcCully- Do you happen to have any other info on your swap or pictures you could share. The reason I need the shorter piece is because I am swapping in a Duramax intercooler/6. 5L rad (they both fit and work great) but I need either more room by the fan or have to move the intercooler out farther (the way it is I had to space the head lights out 1/2" which I don't like mind you they still look okay in the grill)

Any info would be great!

Thanks... Ryan

I had a Gen 1 at the shop. I pulled the idler pulley and idler off I set them next to each other the gen 1 was shorter, and it moved the fan to the right hand side. I do not have the ID#. As far as the inches of difference I do not recal exactly the measurement 1. 5"? With the gen 2 the fan had no clearance to speak of. (it cleared but any deflection would have made it contact. ) After installing the gen 1 I was able to run the stock fan and clutch from the gen 2.

Ryan- I will be happy to take photos let me know what you want to see. all photos taken at the time are property of DP mag.

Dog- I am saying that on my truck I used these parts and it worked for me.

I also let the radiator into the core support about . 5" to help insure that there would be no problems.

Does anyone want a billet aluminum valve cover?

Well, I can just tell you what would help alot of people. A few pics of the engine mounts you made up. Pictures of that pulley and the clearance as well as just a few pics of straight in under the hood. Maybe also of under the body looking up (I think you made your own crossmember right? Also, maybe of what you did to make your intercooler fit.

Thanks... Ryan

fyi - our mounts set the engine in the correct position to use the stock dodge fan and pulley, a little clearancing @ the firewall, brackets for stock ac and alternator- double pulleys for the belts - plug the oil fill, put a valve cover up top w/ the oil fill hole and there you are. you need to run a diesel radiator also (the gas version will expand and break - been there, done that) also you will find in the hot weather, the electric fans won't cool it efficiently - overheating is not an option with a diesel - you will be rebuilding it if you do... .

Well, this is exactly what happens with any sort of mods/conversions that people do. Everyone does it differently and has different opinions. My personal opinion on my truck was to have everything look stock. My cummins is going to look stock (all bracketry and bolt-ons in the stock location) and my rad/intercooler is actual GMC material so it looks stock for the year. I cut into my rad support and fitted the Durmax intercooler and then my GM rad fit right up against that nicly. I am just a little concerned about the fan being close to the rad and this is why I would like to move it back a bit. I am going to look at that braket tomorrow and see what I think.

I also have about an inch and a half between the back of the head and the firewall just to keep the heat away a little.

everyone is entitled to do what they feel is best, just offering some wisdom from the experience of over 200 conversions. we have made all the mistakes and paid for all the corrections in one way or another, trying to save you guys some major headaches and expense down the road! all our conversions come out looking factory and will have years of driving with no problems. this is a 97 that just left. former 6. 5, ac left in stock location, stock alternator, custom pulley for correction of tach signal.

Is it just me or is that cummins sitting on a real angle in the engine bay? could just be the picture though? Mine sits pretty well level (I did cut into the 2wd crossmember though) to lower the front of the engine. Reason I did that is because when I had it on an angle with the 6-speed and the T-case the back of the T-case was almost touching the ground!

Nice pictures and your right... does look stock!

Thanks again with the help on the Alternator last month. I did actually land up going with the Dodge Alt and my ALT shop rebuilt it for me, put a different cover on the back and wired in my Tach wire to it and also wired me up an external regulator. Cost me $150 and now the bracketry is one less thing I have to figure out before my deadline! June 1 this thing has to be done so I can break it in for 2 weeks before my honeymoon!

I have my engine as close to the firewall as possible. I am not running a radiator mounted intercooler. With OEM fan mount, I have 3. 5" for a fan. If I put a radiator mounted intercooler, even less. I have 90K already on the bottom mount big 6. 5 intercooler, a flexolite full-time fan setup. Pulling mostly. No cooling problems, for the most part. As for my AC, I found that notching the AC pump and running one shorter bolt was a solution. I have 1/4' from frame clearance. There is no core on Nippon Denso AC pumps, so it mattered little. Took me 10 minutes to notch it. As for my tach, I have an internally regulated OEM style Nippon Denso alternator that a local rebuilder installed the internal regulator and tach outlet for $83. 00. I am very please with at least that.

I do want a bigger clutched fan and bigger intercooler. I will get it, one route or another. You guys have great ideas.

Thanks, (enjoy) Would like more.

An EXTRA nice thing to see outside of here :0)

Bryan,

Even though I didnt see it anywhere in the write-up, somehow I knew you were probably a member here

I think you guys did a superb job on the conversion, and I have taken notes on the article for my upcoming 12V swap into an earlier square body GMC.

Is the Billet aluminum valve cover you are offering the one from the article? It would certianly make a nice addition to my engine bay :D

Keep up the good work!

it isn't as angled as it seems in the picture, its the ac up top that makes it look that way - however it is degreed higher in the front so that that line down the drivetrain is straight to eliminate any vibration. (the intercooler is mounted between the radiator and the grill, not affecting the fan clearance).

dawna

p. s. if you go over and look at the 06 PS thread, there are some pictures of that project - degreed the same way.

dawna,do you have a part# and a price for the ac mount on the 95/97 gm trucks, what about the altenator bracket for the same years?talked to ken about the a/c bracket back during the summer, said yall didnt have one at that time. will be doing my conversion in about a month, still gathering the last nick nack parts. .
