Mismatch

Where is the mis-match? by that I mean what piece is smaller, head port, gasket or exhaust port?

I was looking at the 3 piece manifold and when you put the gasket against the port of the manifold it (the manifold port) doesn't match up,... it is smaller. This is a guess on my part, but what I saw looked to be about 10% smaller than what I would have expected. I have heard of many guys cleaning up (making them larger and port matching them to the manifold gaskets). Maybe you should call Piers and see if that isn't why they port their ATS manifolds. IMO they accomplish two things by doing that,... they port match the manifold and probably gain all that lost volume due to it being too small and they also increase flow by porting it nicely. Personally I haven't heard of a single incident of the 04. 5 and 05 having any manifold problems and I know they upgraded and made them more substantial than previous exhaust manifolds. So although it would be the ideal time to change out the manifold when I pull the stock huffer to put on my DD/BB, I won't do it especially after what I saw.

Fred posted this on another thread:

I had it up to 42psi, and temps never went over 1400 on the end of the pulls in 5th and 6th. I tried it with a few different boxes to get some decent comparisons.

It is now happy in its permanent home on a new 05 running an ATS manifold and an Edge Juice. Maybe the new owner will chime in on this thread with his impression real soon.

That was on 5/2 so he took it off a while back.

I don't think 1400* with a Juice is too good. I'm running a Juice HOT and EZ stacked and just hit that temp with the stock huffer.

I'm also looking at ordering this and installing a new ATS manifold at the same time. Any more reports on it would be great... TIA, Scott

Scott, bear in mind Fred has the '98. 5-'02 ATS manifold on his 3rd Gen, the 3rd Gen ATS is a 2 piece and keeps the turbo in the stock location (which Fred's is not).

A stock truck with a stock turbo will make 1400*. You are saying you only see 1400* WOT, top of high gear with a HOT Juice and EZ? That don't sound right.

yeah, I ran the turbo for a week, and it worked great for the power I was running through it. My posts on the other thread were with a VA 3. 1 on 50%, and a twin program TST on 4/2 with my DD2 injectors.

The truck ran hard, and spool was good. This is the same power level I ran with my twins and hit 60psi and 1200 on the pyro. I also ran it with the Quad RACE and DD2's and the VA3. 1 with the DD2's. Boost didn't get as high, and temps were under 1400.

The one comment I have, and the owner of the 05 which now has this turbo had, was the sweet sound the exhaust and intake have now. It is a different sound, but really nice. It is not like any other turbo I have heard. Very unique.

Darn. . I was hoping for a comment on in town spool / drivability with boxes off.
