I pulled the open filter out when I changed pans and installed the temp sender. I replaced it with the closed filter from Napa. Immediately I began 'slipping'. At a rest I'd hit the gas and the engine would just rev, and then the transmission would catch and with a thud i'd take off. Not good. I poured some Lucas No Slip in and it seemed to fix the issue for the most part. I was very ******, as I just bought the truck and figured the guy, who seemed like a straight shooter for the most part and gave me a THICK stack of maintenance records (fuel, oil, tire rotation, everything, most at the dealership), had poured in some snake oil to last long enough to sell it, and just wasn't counting on me flushing it right away. After some discussion with Fox, who will someday be the recipient of the thickest slice of beef and finest beers in the county, I was crossing my fingers that the issue was the filter not sealing with the valve body correctly. My assumption was that the Lucas goo was thick enough to create a plug where the hole was. Without this fluid, air was being pumped through, and as soon as it picked up enough fluid the transmission would engage. I stopped at my local dealership today and asked for a filter, but I got one that looked exactly the same as my Napa replacement. They made sure there wasn't another part number, and I explained to them the one I pulled out looked like the sketch on the monitor, an open element. One of the guys grabbed a filter that looked exactly like the open unit I pulled out. He wasn't sure what it was from and said he couldn't check the part number to see what it came from. For $11. 60 I brought it home and swapped it out. Replaced the ATF+4 with some Dexron 3 and fired it up. Cycled through the gears and then took off, and no slip/stall at all
Cliff Notes: What the hell is up with my 47RE that it wouldn't use the proper filter, and that some random filter seals with the valve body and makes everything work ok?
Hopefully the time I drove on it in it's past condition didn't damage the transmission too much, but I'm ecstatic I don't have to come up with 4k right now for a DTT unit, and can instead only sell SOME of my earthly belongings and get a trailer.
