2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Heavy Duty Lightbulbs???

I pulled the open filter out when I changed pans and installed the temp sender. I replaced it with the closed filter from Napa. Immediately I began 'slipping'. At a rest I'd hit the gas and the engine would just rev, and then the transmission would catch and with a thud i'd take off. Not good. I poured some Lucas No Slip in and it seemed to fix the issue for the most part. I was very ******, as I just bought the truck and figured the guy, who seemed like a straight shooter for the most part and gave me a THICK stack of maintenance records (fuel, oil, tire rotation, everything, most at the dealership), had poured in some snake oil to last long enough to sell it, and just wasn't counting on me flushing it right away. After some discussion with Fox, who will someday be the recipient of the thickest slice of beef and finest beers in the county, I was crossing my fingers that the issue was the filter not sealing with the valve body correctly. My assumption was that the Lucas goo was thick enough to create a plug where the hole was. Without this fluid, air was being pumped through, and as soon as it picked up enough fluid the transmission would engage. I stopped at my local dealership today and asked for a filter, but I got one that looked exactly the same as my Napa replacement. They made sure there wasn't another part number, and I explained to them the one I pulled out looked like the sketch on the monitor, an open element. One of the guys grabbed a filter that looked exactly like the open unit I pulled out. He wasn't sure what it was from and said he couldn't check the part number to see what it came from. For $11. 60 I brought it home and swapped it out. Replaced the ATF+4 with some Dexron 3 and fired it up. Cycled through the gears and then took off, and no slip/stall at all :D :D

Cliff Notes: What the hell is up with my 47RE that it wouldn't use the proper filter, and that some random filter seals with the valve body and makes everything work ok?

Hopefully the time I drove on it in it's past condition didn't damage the transmission too much, but I'm ecstatic I don't have to come up with 4k right now for a DTT unit, and can instead only sell SOME of my earthly belongings and get a trailer.

That is the only filter(the one on the left) I have used on my 93 when I had it, and on my 96? Napa part # 17957 ATP. I like the gasket that comes with it. I wonder why the problem? Glad you solved it.

i didn't get a gasket with mine, just the filter itself. just drove about 20 miles to go have dinner and everything shifted beautifully, so, case closed. DTT will have to wait for my money and some lucky bastid in the heavy equipment trader is going to get my money for a trailer :)

I've done my 99 3Xs now w/the one on the right - never had any problems? One on the left looks like one's I used on car trannies though. MHO

I don't know how many times I've changed my transmission fluid in my '01 in the last 40k miles, but it's at least 10. I have always used the style on the left, as has Denis in his '01. 5, as has our other buddy Luke in his '97. We all run DTT trannies, and that is what Fred put in mine when I had my transmission done the first time, and same with Bill K. putting that one in Denis's when he had his transmission done. Same exact filter, just the one on the right has a pretty cover around it that does nothing (as far as I can tell) except cost you twice as much. Filter on left at home is $7. 50, and the one on the right is $15. 00. 37k on my DTT and not a problem yet...

The one on the left is the preferred filter. It is off the 727 transmissions and possibly some of the earlier 47rh/47re transmissions as well. They are the same filters just the one on the right is in a restrictive plastic housing. Not to mention the one on the left is cheaper :)

I agree with Robert, your fluid was low the first time. At least you didnt drive it til it burnt up. I use the cheaper filters only, all i work on for the most part is DTT trannies.

One of the bolts on the open filter is longer then it's counterpart on the newer closed type filter. If this longer bolt is used, when changing from open to the closed filter, the bolt will bottom before the correct torque on the filter and lower half of the valve body is acheived. The bolts for the new style filter are available from the dodge dealer for about a $1 each.

Had my ETC DTT done at Chips in Sieverville TN and the one on the left is what I have used since 20k, now 43k. One BK recommended. Good enough for me. His transmission, his advice, works well (cheaper too).

Get mine at local race parts store.

Bob Weis

ps: go to DTT site and read up on ATF's and different characteristics of the different blends. when DTT rebuilds I as understand the fluid does not need to be as slippery and hence able to use ATF+3.
