What are the differences between the 215HP injection pump and the 180 pump? Can the 180 pump be modified to pump as much or more fuel as the 215?

to start with

-- the cam inside the pump

-- plungers and barrels

-- 181 vs 151 delivery valves

-- the injectors ( althought not part of the pump directly )

I also think there are some internal cast things. Maybe?? Thought I heard something like that once. Anyways seems like the way to get 215 pump stuff is to get a 215 pump and not try to upgrade.

I recall Piers once did a post where he mentioned something about building a race pump. It mentions the sizes of the plungers and barrels that were upgraded, used a cam from a 160 pump and custom grinds it, and a host of other mods. Thats the stuff you are looking for.

215's forever

You might, I have been told that I have the 180 pump by some and the 215 by others. The people at Cummins told me that I had a 230 HP engine in my truck according to the engine code... I don't know so I guess the best thing to do is pull the pump and crank it up some, whether it really needs it or not. Or do like Sly suggests and get a 215 if mine turns out not to be one.

Your truck does have a 215 pump, unless it is a CA truck with the emissions stuff on it. If that is the case MGM can tell you the difference between a 215 pump in a 49 state truck and a 215 pump in a CA truck (actually closer to the 180 pumps).

What is the difference between a 215 pump in a 49 state truck and a 215 pump in a CA truck? That sounds like what I have.

My 97 Ca. 5speed truck had a 180 pump.

215 delivery valves and cam, but the WRONG plungers and barrels.

Piers said it is basically cheaper just to buy a 215 pump as it is too expensive to change them over.

How much do you need? I am at 360 rwhp with no turbo upgrade.

I have never put my truck on a dyno. I have run it on a country road with 1/4 mile marked off and can get about 87mph without thrashing it. Sure it has some power, I am still looking for more. Do you know if there are any other differences between these pumps besides the plungers and barrels?

Cooker

I have the CA engine.

That's all I know about them, Piers is the #1source on p-pumps.

I did around around 82 at the strip,7000 pounds, 3:54. The clutch was slipping, first time at the track with the 300 inj.

If you haven't all ready, LOSE the CA emissions crapola.

Usally someone out here has intakes and exhaust manifolds for cheap. Mine were free, from friends.

How is the new 215 brandon?
