We haven't done something like this in a while. So I thought we could do a vehicle picture thread. But instead of showing off your picture perfect clean cars and trucks, let's give a shout out to the rigs out there in the salt and mud working hard every day.

So post up the best of your filthy dirty vehicle pics.

I'll start with my '07 after our little snow storm today.

Something I do not miss from many years just west of Cleveland OH, that blankety blank road salt crap.

J, brine has only been used here for maybe the last 10 years or so that I can recall, at least as extensively as it is used now. Beet juice actually doesn't corrode, it is used as ballast in farm tires all the time, it actually prevents corrosion of the wheel. Our district uses it to help the rock salt stick to the road rather than bounce off and into the ditch (in theory). But they use the brine more than anything from what I see.
 
Here's mine this morning- showing TDR pride on the cap window. We've only had a couple of dustings, but the city felt it needed to put on a salt show.

That salt ruined a 1968 Olds Delmont 88 convertible my first car and a 1975 Camaro my 1st manual BTW it ate into the sheet metal in spite of best efforts to wash it away, spent many cold nites at the spray car wash washing the under body.

I was looking for a Mustang or something and found the Delmont. It was 4 years old, 38,000 miles loaded convertible. My Dad went for the test drive and backed it down the drive and into the street, pulled it into D, stopped and looked over at me and said-

Son, you found an automobile.

$1600 of hard earned summer job money and it was mine.

We have a better chance here of an ice storm messing things up rather than snow.

I don't know about you guys, but in the last nearly 30 years of driving, I've never sold a vehicle because I couldn't fix it mechanically. I have however sold/junked several that have been rusted beyond the point of no return.
 
We use a mix of rock salt and calcium chloride. When I do my summer work on winter eq, one duty is to flush and inspect that spray system. I lost a pair of boots when I yanked the strainer, and a gallon or 2 hit the shop floor. I hosed it away, but not before it got all over my boots. Inside 3 days, they curled up and were unwearable like the wicked witch's feet in the wizard of oz. that stuff is just evil.
 
The Yukon after a 325 mile round trip to Campobello NB and Beals Island yesterday. Some bare roads, most though were wet from road chemicals or complete glare ice. Changed back and forth. All two lane roads, way more fatiguing than Interstate travel. I knew it when I got home for sure!!

Here's my salt truck, not only have to deal with all the local towns spraying/applying salt to the roadway's --- we also apply it on our commercial account's. Went through eight tons of rock salt this past week. Temp's are up this week good time to clean up the fleet!

That's a lot of salt Frank. We average between 1 and 1 1/2 tons a year to do the few properties that we have. I'm assuming you buy in bulk. We've been buying pallets of 50#bags since it is a little easier for us to store.
