BIG,

Points on all sides. I grew up in OH and we had a pretty decent snow season some years, coldest temp I experienced was -20 F it had an impact on the whole area. But in general we experienced the seasons and rolled with them. I can't begin to figure out how many hours I spent snow plowing with our Cub Cadet 100 10HP with a snow blade and chains, it was a lot. Even did neighbors drives and sidewalks. We had the coats and the sleds and enjoyed it.

I think some of the issue for the governments is lack of available funds for a very occasional problem, snow or icing. We have lived in OK, TN and and SC and all three states had much less winter issues than OH so when a storm was way across the next state and not due for a day or two, they roll up the sidewalks and hibernate. The sun comes out and everybody talks about the big storm. And the norhtern transplants roll their eyes and etc.

Here in SC the pines grow like weeds and when they get heavy, snap and the power lines take a big hit. My buddy is a lineman and tells the stories of traveling all over the SE fixing power outages after winter storms.

http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/dangerous-snow-covered-roads-prove-deadly-in-south-carolina/ This was on last night, just another media story about conditions, but those pics of the pines, I-95, I-26 in particular in some sections looks like they bulldozed a cut thru a tree tunnel and laid a road.

See the Hummer in the background of the opening shot? Our Son, Jacob is in the truck on call with the SC National Guard on standby to respond and assist. He's been out since monday I think.

Now we don't have stores with snow blowers around here and the WalMart was using pool salt to de-ice the entrance cause the solar ice melter is due out real soon temps above freezing this afternoon.

I do think that Be Prepared is a darn good approach. We have some water, got a good amount of propane, my old Coleman stove is ready so I can cook as long as the food holds out.

Just chillin in SC

Im happy to see someone else that thinks like I do about Mules, they are the best thing to have around for the prepper.

I say im a prepper but not in the same sense as the ones on the TV shows, I think that they believe in what they are doing although the reasons for their preparedness is kind of off beat? We are prepared for the worst of mankind, no matter how it happens. On the TV show they for the most part prepare for a very specific reason or happening. We are looking at what will happen when folks cant get the drink of water from the water spigot or the store shelves have no more bags of chips left. People get ugly fast when they are hungry!!

It sounds strange to some of the people that don't live with the snow like we do. But I look forward to getting out and working to get things opened up and making sure everything is up and running like it should be, animals taken care of because they ARE a source of our Preparedness they don't need gas, or tires repaired but do need feed and I have the ability to put on new shoes, I can say without hesitation that a truck cant take us where they can!! if we need to get out of harms way.

For the social services around here its looked at a little differently, than some anyway. From the time that the snow STARTS to melt we are prepping for the next winter, cutting wood, clearing ditches for the rains and snow melt, cutting trees that may become a problem when winter hits again taking care of things so we wont have to do it in the dead of winter when it makes it twice as hard on a person. The same goes for our road crew, they are working like there is no tomorrow. They do a great job of keeping the roads open and things working, but there is always something that happens to make things worse. Our power outages around town are because its a co-op type deal, they don't want to spend money on things they dont have to, and subsequently when wires snap or transformers blow they are not in any BIG hurry to get it fixed this is one reason for us to have gone off grid with our home.

My Dad raised me with the thinking that there is truly only one person that you can count on and care for the family and that's YOURSELF!!

I was getting wood supply ready in July. Wood all split and stored by mid August for the 2014-2015 heating season.
When the first blast of cold -20's temps with -40 to -50 wind chills arrived I hauled wood from the shed up to the house. Had some ready at fireplace and woodburner. Then made sure I had enough kerosene. My wife thought I was going off the deep end! I always have a backup plan for my backup plan.
I just sleep better at night.
When I look at a neighboring sub division a few miles from here I wonder how those households would survive w/o electricity and no heat. I would guess none have any back up plan to heat their 3500SF home.

The govt has taught many people to depend on their "programs" and regular checks. Those people no longer think or plan for themselves. They are ready-made "victims" of whatever situations occur, and the victim status gets them more programs, and the ability to deny any personal responsibility.

It doesn't help how poor the weather forecasts are on both the local and national scale. For the last couple of days, we have been shown as being outside the area that was supposed to be hit by this latest storm. I took this just after noon today, this was still up on the accuweather site. Keep in mind, we had already seen nearly a half foot by then....

I mean come on. I understand missing a forecast but to keep feeding the same bad info to the public after the event has started is just a little beyond stupid.
