I'm low on $$$ and just cant afford to do it professionally. What kind of prep work and pait should I use. It is silver and needs to be white. I heard Krylon makes a good plastic paint???

Thanks

Hang it up in the garage and save your money for a good paint job.

:{ Just say "NO" to rattlecan top coats. :{

Krylon Fusion

BigDan - On my old '96 Dodge, I wanted to do the semi "sport" conversion. I first had the best painter in town try it - he did it twice and the paint peeled and flaked within a couple of weeks and got worse in rain.

Luckily, I hit a hit a deer :-laf and got the thing replaced. I then had the best body man in town give it a try and the paint chipped off after he did it too.

Do a search on here - I posted about this very thing over a year ago. The paint you want is Krylon Fusion and you can get it at Wal-Mart for less than $4 a can. It is the only thing that has won the approval of TDR members and all of them have said that it has stayed on their truck. I have asked around town here about it and everyone says it's good stuff. Give it a shot.

Oddly enough, I'm having my grey plastic painted white with the Fusion paint next week. We'll see what happens...

Good luck.

Update

I found my old thread. Also, do a search on "paint won't stick to grey plastic bumper" or something to that effect and you will get all kinds of reviews on the fusion.

Apparently, it's the only thing that will work.

Here's the link to my old thread.

i painted mine last summer and have have no signs of the paint comming off chiping or flaking i belive you just have to use the correct paint

i used martin sealor the stucc from napa

frist i simple greened the whole bumper then wiped it down with klean easy

lightly sanded it

sprayrd it with adhesion promoter

then used tec base and universal urathane clear coat but make sure you add the flex additives or it will crack and peal

krylon fusion worked for me. i had a non sport truck with the ugly grey lower bumper cover. i took a few hours and pulled the lower and upper covers off along with the fog light inserts. wiped them down with paint thinner and painted them with fusion... . about 5 light coats... not it looks great... i am about to do my jeep fender flare the same way.

Get some flexible plastic primer from the auto body/paint store... 20. 00 a quart on average.

Buy some good automotive paint, paint shops can mix it is the can for you and then they have clear in the can too. This is not regular spray paint but good auto PPG paint put in a spray can for each customcolor. Then your done the whole thing will cost about 75 bucks

just poke around and find a body shop that will do it for cheap, and/or find a friend that has some connections

Ive yet to paint my 01 bumper but have it lined up to have preped/painted/installed for 50. 00
