2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission DIY Steering Box Rebuild

The steering box is pretty well done on my '96, came across this and am thinking to give it a try PavementSucks.com - Truck Tech - Steering Box Rebuild - Dodge Ram 4x4

question is making sure of getting the right seals for my steering box, and the roller bearing. I'm pretty sure I can source the bearing once it's taken apart since I've had to hunt down bearings before.

The price is sure attractive vs. what remans cost, and with careful preload adjustment it should provide good service life before needing rebuilt again.

Good find Vaughn! That's a great write-up of tearing down a steering gear. I'll keep that one. They make it look so easy in the pics. It's worth a try rebuilding the gear.

Oh my gosh, that's great! And perfect timing too, as I'm about to yank mine out. I've priced them and they're not cheap, so this may be my perfect solution!

My steering has only been leaking for about 3 years now, so it's just about time to get this problem nipped. :-laf

Do I order everything from Pavement Sucks, Dodge, or ?

I've decided to just put a rebuilt unit in, which I'm getting from Napa. Hope it's the right one!! I have an extra core so I can save mine too...

Anyone know just how much fluid I'll need? The link has directions but no quantity, and I don't want to run short or buy quarts more than necessary.

I know this thread is a few months old. But, I'm somewhat interested in tackling my own steering gear rebuild. However, I would like to update it to the faster ratio 3-turn box. That mod should just be a worm gear change. Does anyone happen to know a source for parts for rebilding/modifying these steering gears?
