I did essentially the same as Tom did, but used the Duraliner stuff in a spray can. It goes on thin, so I gave them about 5 coats.

That was done about 2 years ago and it's holding up just fine.

120 BILLS A GALLON. JEEZ. here i thought doing my rocker panels that are exposed to rock chips might be a good idea. Im not so sure now. However as i type this i realize that maybe that is 120 bills of insurance against further damage and expensive repairs. How much do you think one gallon of durabak would cover?

Durabak

Seed,

I did the whole underside of my CJ-7 with one gallon of Durabak, it still looks great and I can't find any rock chips in the fenderwells. I used a gallon and a another quart to do the interior, but I put it in pretty heavy!! Still looks great after 2 years. One word of caution, if you order colors, don't order some now and then some later, coz the color may not exactly match. I would want it all to come from the same batch. Happened to me, but that was 2 years ago, they may have taken care of that by now. Other than that, it is great stuff!!

Personally, I've tried both sprayed-on and stick-on. Both worked fine, however both situations were different.

Didn't have running boards on 98. 5 truck, just tube step. So, the rocks and road debris would fly up and chip paint, not to mention my feet rubbing on door sill as I entered the truck. Solution: had line-x sprayed along rocker panel and door sill. Looked great and prevented chipping. A little spendy though... couldn't afford gauges after that.

Second truck, 2001. 5, I had full-length, factory running boards installed. Solved chipping, but still had to protect door sill area. Solution: installed stick-on protectors from dealer. Cheap and works great.

If you decide to use a spray-on/roll-on coating, make sure it will stand up to UV and road salts/solvents. Will start to look like heck in a hurry.

I investigated using some kind of bedliner to cover up blemishes on the bottom edge of my camper and then painting over it. Results were "ok".

Anyway, as far as the rocker panels, go to Walmart and look at their aerosol cans of paint. They've got some interesting spatter-coat and different kinds of paint that go on with a texture that covers up stuff. Plus it's tough. Might be better than the bedcoatings.
