From 94 to 02 the 3500 and 2500 4x4 have the dana 80 and the 2500 2wd's have the dana 70. The 2500 2wd's may have the 80 in the later years in this range, I'm not sure.

I don't think that I'd let that guy work on your truck.

My 99 4x4 has a dana 70 the dana 80 are 3500 i ask the guy to see what he would say

he did not have the rite answer it would have ben better if he said i don't know but he tryed to lay on me that dana never used a dana 80 in dodge trucks

what does this tell me he does not know what he thinks he knows

back away big red flag

i knew the answer a year back i had the rearend rebilt by aamco and had it back in there 6 times the guy did not know what he was doing so to make a long story short i had to do the research to get the rearend rite he was telling me it's a 80 when no it's a dana 70 people will tell you that thay know all kinds of stuff

ask if you don't get the rite answers back out

Actually, the 2nd gen 2500s got a D80 *hybrid* if they had the 5-spd, while the autos typically got the D70... Dodge occasionally missed one, but this it the general rule.

All 2nd gen 3500s got a D80.

As I understand it, the "hybrid" part applies only to the axles and tubes - not the actual differential gear/bearing assemblies - perhaps someone with better info can chime in?

My own 2wd '02 has the "80"...

The D80 "hybrid" is a D80 center section with D70 spindles... everything from my dad's D80 (hubs/seals/bearings) was the same as my D70 at the wheel.

The way to tell if your 2500 manual trans rear axle is an 80 hybrid is to look at the axle tubes where they enter the brake backing plate. A true 80 is full-sized all the way, the hybrid axle tube is reduced in diameter/tapered at that point.

I know several 2002 manual trucks with this hybrid axle.

I'm pretty sure my father's D80 tubes were larger than those in my D70... the main difference was the spindle and SRW hub. I'm also pretty sure there is not a step down at the housing.

And FWIW, they only offered a D80 hybrid in the 2500 trucks... because the hybrid is a SRW axle, not a DRW.

I'm still wondering if the hybrid was still used in later '01. 5/'02 rear disc brake HO (NV5600) 2500's...

Not sure if the later spindle or disc brake setup allowed or required the full 80 rear axle/differential - will hafta check my rear axle tubes for any taper at the wheels...

One quote from the above:

Dana 80 2500 axles and 3500 axles are identical except for the outer wheel spindle and hub assembly.

BUT, at the bottom of the page:

Last Update February 3, 2000

The last year model truck the table lists, is 1998.

Unfortunately, NONE of the above pointers seem to cover or include the details of the hybrid 80, or the specific year or model (2500/3500) they were used in - specifically as related to my curiosity as the whether or not the '01. 5/'02 HO 6-speed trucks might have also had the 80 installed instead of the hybrid 80, like the 3500 did.

AH WELL, not terribly important - just curious - and thanks for the pointers - that PDF file has GREAT info and illustrations... :)
