Dodge Durango grief

Ok guys,

I need some help here. My wifes '99 Durango with the 5. 9, is shifting really erratic. We took it to the dealer. They did a full transmission service, and found no problems with the transmission. Could it be something else. When you take off, under light throttle, it almost seems like it shifts between 1st and second, back and forth. If you take off with lots of throttle, no problems. Any thoughts?

They are magic boxes that like to break.



I would suggest asking around at work, church, wherever and get several people to refer you to one transmission shop that has a good reputation. A shop that knows what they are doing is more valuable than gold.

Could it be a TPS on it's way out??

Sounds like they need to put there more experienced mech. on it. Did you take one of them for a ride in it and show them what it is doing? Could be a TPS.

One of my friends has a 1500 truck of the same vintage with the same motor. He was having problems and the dealer reflashed the computer and it has been fine since. A transmission shop he asked siad it needed a rebuild for $2300 without even looking at it.

When you say, "full transmission service. " do you mean they actually pulled the pan? I just learned with my wifes car that they can do all the work including changing the fluid in the torque converter without pulling the pan.



I had to specifically say PULL THE PAN. Thats another expensive story though..... good luck.

This is a long shot, but my wife's '99 Durango would not shift out of first gear. However, in this case, a code was clearly set and read with the OBD-II. There was a bad speed sensor so the transmission did not know when to shift. Perhaps you have an intermittent here. Unfortunately, the Durango's of this year won't display codes without the OBD-II scanner.

I think you guys that are pointing to the TPS are on the money. Yes the pan was pulled, and the valve body filter was also replaced. I did not take the tech out for a drive. However, they drove it, and it worked fine for them. However, I'm sure whoever drove it, put his foot in it. Where is the TPS located. No offense, but I'm not very fond of automatics.
