Wrong again. You wouldn't be in no-man's land if they had a taller ratio. You should be in 5th and not OD while towing. Cooler transmission temps w/1:1 ratio.



This thread is going nowhere. It's amazing.

It is obvious you have not towed near max combined weight. Getting into a situation on a very steep grade where you've had to slow down because of other traffic when you are lugging the engine and losing speed just plain out sucks. Having to shift under load with all that weight isn't the smoothest thing in world. Taller gears can get the job done, but please don't insult us by saying the lower gears don't do it better. DC should always error on the side of making a more capable and powerful truck. Your point is well taken, they should offer another gear option. But, to say that DC made a terrible mistake and ruined a "good thing" is rhidiculous.

We might disagree on the ratio issue but I'm with you 100% on this one DPKetchum.

When towing, I run all day on the interstate at 2000 rpm. That translates to approximately 62 mph. I get 13. 8 mpg towing my 27. 5' Trail Harbor. Had the truck and trailer weighed on a CAT Scale the last time out and the trailer topped out loaded at 8,200 lbs. The truck was within DC's limits for a 2500.



I'd run at 55 mph for the better mileage, but I'd hate to be run down by a KW or Peterbuilt.

My problem with it is, who is to say what is too fast? Got Radar? Just because you think your speed for condition is accurate, and another rig goes on by, is that cause for alarm? A panic 911 call?

It rarely see's above 70 empty/towing period

Please don't tell me you are one of those drivers who sits in the left lane at or below the speed limit holding up the flow of traffic. Thats against the law for you to impede traffic acting like a traffic cop.

Naw. I drive normal speeds and in the right lane if possable. But if its a reckless driver and towing anything at 80 plus is reckless. Only called the law on a few but if needed I don't hesitate. Have called on more TOSSING trash out of vehicles then anything. Cell phones,gotta love them. Hey I'll drive above 70 just NOT in my dually.

Like I said, I'm over it. I don't need to defend my position because it's reasonable. The only thing I'm saying is that options are good. That bothers you. I don't know why, but it does.

Not that I'm planning on towing this fast, but you might want to avoid West Texas Interstates - the following law took effect this year:

HB 2257 allows the TxDOT commission to establish a daytime speed limit of 80 miles per hour on I-10 or I-20 in Crockett, Culberson, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, Kerr, Kimble, Pecos, Reeves, Sutton or Ward counties. If established, this speed does not apply to truck tractors, trailers, semi trailers, or trucks, other than light trucks and light trucks pulling a trailer. This bill took effect immediately.

I'm just reporting fact. I'm not saying that it's safe or unsafe - just legal. So, don't bother calling 911 if you find yourself in West Texas and someone comes around you at 80 MPH with a Teton behind them.

Is it written anywhere, by competent, official authority that a CTD powered Dodge HD truck is not designed to travel at 75-80 MPH? THAT'S what I thought... ..... it isn't written... ... or if it is, I haven't seen it. Trust me, if it is written, then I will cease my unloaded 75-80 MPH travels. It is sorta hard to to justify never driving a truck except when hauling tho... . dontcha think? Doesn't pass the common sense test. Don't we ALL drive our trucks unloaded at times? I do... ... everyday. Once again, is it written that the truck's sole purpose is hauling heavy loads?



As for hauling loads at 75-80 MPH... ... I wouldn't do it..... but I will travel unloaded at those speeds all day long. No problem. Call the cops. See my sig line for truck description..... and be sure you include all of the yayhoos around me doing the same speed.
