The fact that GM owns Allison does not preclude them from selling to DC.

A couple months back in one of my RV magazines it said Dodge and Allison were working on a transmission together. It didn't say when it would be out and available.

If memory serves, the venerable NV5600 was mfg by New Venture gear, fundamentally a GM mfg division (at one time) that morphed into a joint GM/DC venture. Since DC has since dumped the NV5600, You gotta wonder what happend to a lot of jobs at NV...

PGiannosa, thats very intersting information. contract through 2010. boy I hope to see that relationship continue. It will be interesting to see how Diesel light trucks evolve over that time period.

oh, and the urban legend was (at one time anyway) so widespread that the Cummins.com website even had an FAQ on the subject. Sadly I can't find it there anymore -- it was a great way to silence Ford fanatics :D

We are in a contract with Cummins right now through at least 2010. So far, this has proven to be a beneficial partnership for both DCX and Cummins and I don't see the Company changing that any time soon.
Does Ford know this? Did a Ford representative sign the contract (since, after all, they DO own Cummins). ;) :D :-laf

My understanding is that Ford does indeed own a large percentage of Cummins. Possibly something like 51%. May be wrong but I am pretty sure of this. Ford is huge (volvo, jaguar, austin, and others). Someone with real knowledge may prove different, but I think we help Ford a little every time we buy DC.

No, Ford doesn't own Cummins. As others have said, Cummins covered this urban legend on their website in the Dodge Ram FAQ section before their recent website redesign.

woh, back the truck up. I'm not making this up. at one time Ford owned about 7% of Cummins stock but not any more. There used to be an FAQ on Cummins.com stating that Ford does not own any portion of Cummins.

in order for you to be "pretty sure" that Ford owned 51%, you need to cite sources. Cummins has said no.

I am fine with that. Not trying to start anything here. That why I was hoping to find someone knowledgable with real sources. It wouldn't surprise me if we did find out that Ford still has a stake in Cummins. But hey even if only 7% thats only what ~$350 dollars going to Ford on a CTD sale?

yea you got that right. I've been using that FAQ for a couple of years now to end that subject. good to see it again

Yeah, I want to make sure everyone knows that Ford does not own cummins. I especially like showing that link to all my Ford buddy's who keep telling me Ford owns cummins. They shut up real fast then. :-laf

GM owns Allison. It will NEVER happen.

GM does not own Allison. The Allison in the GM rigs is designed by GM but built by Allison. Allison has their own transmission but also builds many different ones based on the individual factories request. It probably was a motorhome with the Cummins as that is just one of the incarnations for the Allison.

Years ago Ford had a 10% stake in Cummins as did Dodge. Cummins bought back all outstanding shares and is now wholly owned.

It's a shame this rumor is just that. To me Dodge has really dropped the ball in the transmission department, and I would love to see a Allison automatic transmission bolted behind the Cummins. People can flap there traps all they want about how made the Allison is, but that is only because they DON'T have one! Any idiot, or sane person need only to look at the difference in the 48RE's(47, and 46 there all the same) wimpy input shaft compared to the monster Allison input shaft to see the huge difference there is between a REAL diesel automatic transmission and a gas automatic transmission. The rest of the trany is just as beefy as the input shaft. Now DTT and ATS have built Alison's that must be pure awesome, I can only wish.

I must say that the Dodge transmission has done remarkably well considering it's long heritage, and all the different vehicles with different power plants it has been bolted into. But, that does not mean it is well suited for the rough life a heavy-duty diesel truck generally See's. Dodge really got their monies worth out of the old 727, now 44 re, 46, 47 and 48 transmissions. We are the only group of diesel truck owners that has to share their automatic transmissions with the smaller mid-size trucks of it's brand. Just seems wrong using the same transmission the 1500 series and Dakota series use, but maybe thats just me???
