Trailer T/M Light Burn Fuse

My hitchball seems to rust alot, I started to use that stuff called "Petroleum Jelly" it takes the rust off, and paint and anything else it touches. I was wondering if it might hurt the metal on the hitchball? Would I be better off just to spray paint my hitchball to keep it rust free? What do you guys do?

I cover my balls (hitch balls) with bearing grease ... and leave them that way ... just wipe them off before I'm ready to use them again ... keeps them nice and supple ...

Are you sure you weren't thinking about using Naval Jelly? That's an acid solution that removes rust. It would probably work OK so long as you rinsed it off thoroughly when finished, dried the ball, used a moisture displacer (i. e. , WD-40) to remove any residual moisture and then coated it with grease and covered it (if nothing else, use a split tennis ball) to keep it from rusting again.

rusty balls

No more rusty balls in my house with the replacements being stainless - Something about living in Western Oregon causes rust

mine also rust, but i've found that the rust wears off when I use them, so I just try to use them as much as possible.....

unfortuantely, being married, that doesn't happen often enough (always doing honey dos instead of hauling my trailer around),

so I just take the entire receiver shafts and store all my balls on a shelf in my shop until I need them,,,,all i have to do when the time comes is just insert them and their ready to go... that also keeps others from messing with them...

You could also consider one of those rain coats for your balls. I hear they're quite effective, but I would imagine that after one use you would probably want to wash it out (the lubricant comes off and goos 'em up) and make sure it's dry before you reinstall (or you may risk some mildew or worse yet, rust). . . some people just use an old tennis ball... . I myself never thought this was too appealing, so I just remove my balls when not in use... like someone else said, it keeps other people from messin' with 'em.

I too remove my hitch and store in garage. Use a ball cover when out on the road.

I thought that is says in the instructions that you are supposed to apply grease to the ball, when using it with your trailer. They are not supposed to be dry. Local shop here recommends a silicone lubricant, that I have been using. Works great.

I wipe off and apply a thin coating before each trip. Dont always worry during a trip. Use the ball cover to keep from getting grease on stuff when the hitch is on, and the trailer is not. Anyways in the time I have towed the TT with either this truck or my gasser before, the ball does not rust or show any wear. Each time I wipe if off with a throw away towel, it still looks like new.

Sorry thats it "Naval Jelly".

Thanks for the replies. I will look for some grease and a cover ;)

Ballless????

I use a Hensley... . I suppose that makes me "ballless"... . geeze I never thought of it this way

:--)

All this talk of balls... ... I have a Hitch step which acts as an extra bumper for the clueless tailgaters when they dont stop in time. Much better then having your balls squashed.

Buy a Tennis Ball cut it about half way across put some Grease inside it and put it on your Ball. Then you will have a Green Fuzzy Ball (s) That way your ball won`t rust and you won`t get the grease on your pant leg when you brush up against it.

I buy this white grease stuff from Wally mart. It is made by Reese. Cuts down on friction also.

I got some stuff like that, only it's clear, don't think it's made by Reese either. ;)

I like EMD's the most so far. :-laf :-laf

Those TT people are also into chains and bars. Real preverts. Us 5er towers don't need no stink'n chains, but I have been known to lubricate the pin once and a while.

ROTFLMAO

You guys are killing me.

I have not used my balls in so long they are covered with rust. I think I have forgotten how to use them:confused:
