Hey, thanks ACoyle for the link and Google suggestion.
I sort of looked into "cooking" my own after reading a website about epilepsy and diet. RocsAyn, my Sheridan shelter rescue bc, has a seisure about every 6 mns. My guess is she had a seisure and fell out of a truck, lived in the wild, and was finally picked up by the shelter. She is soooo uncomfortable about riding in the back of a pickup that she ends up with diarrhea after a day or two of travel -- a learning experience for me

She does okay if she rides in the cab or in the topper "shack" with a dog house in the topper.
The cooked diet seemed inconvenient and time consuming given I'm on the trail during the summer when it's so easy to dole out the dry stuff and stick it back in the bag if they are not in the eating mood. Unfortunately, they seem to have good appetites when home, but when we are in the hills they will eat supper sparingly but rarely breakfast. They get as thin as a rail during the summer time and are as filthy as a couple dirt chickens. Believe me a bottomless tent and a couple of horse pads is the ticket

That is what is nice about winter -- they are clean, shiny, and don't smell half bad... . for a dog that is :-laf .
Just instinctively, a constant diet of ground grain, filler, parts is parts, and fat poured on to hide it all can't be good in the long run. Probably, like to do a mix of methods and diets for variety and convenience.
