My dome light has been intermittant for a while and finally gave up the ghost a couple of weeks ago. . . . pulled the lens off and pulled the bulb out - it was partially melted. Thinking (lol) it was a bad buld put in a new bulb, it lit for a second and then the fuse blew immediately.

Got out the trusty Fluke and checked for continuity by disconnecting the wire at the connection near the emergency brake pedal. Looked good - then I wiggled the wire at the socket - dead short  - wiggled the wire at the bulb socket again and it was an open circuit  . Closely examined the bulb socket (i. e. put my cheater readers on) and could see the charring and heating of the bulb socket itself.

Went to the auto parts store and installed a 4 LED red brake light ($10. 95) in place of the dome light setup - most excellent for night lighting of the old cockpit. Suspect that the dome light bulb socket vibrates and over time internally disintegrates into a short or open depending upon the size of bump and speed of the vehicle :) . This could cause a fire so be aware.
