HELP!

I'm ready to upgrade my '02 HO/6 speed with a 4 inch exhaust and bigger injectors. I've heard a fair anount about the DDII's, but not a lot about the Don M 1. 5's. I've been told they are pretty similar in power enhancement, but that the Don M's are more aggressive in lower RPM, and smoke less under heavy throttle. My truck is used primarily as a tow vehicle for a 5th wheel, so EGT comparisons would help as well - current mods are listed below, and consist of a Comp and BHAF - that's it so far.

All pertinent comments, especially first-hand ones, would be greatly appreciated! OH, and is there a website for Don's stuff?

The website for Don's stuff is here:

http://www.f1diesel.com/page1.html

I have his Mach 1. 5's and love them, although almost wish I had purchased 2's instead (can never have enough power). When I installed the injectors I already had the intake and exhaust done. I did not notice higher egts, or at least not worth mentioning. No smoke at wot, or no more than stock at any rate. The difference in power was impressive.

Gary I tow with Don's Mach 2's. Only on the Steepest grades do I have to be concerned with EGT's. I certainly think 1. 5's would exhibit the same if not better. Turbo upgrades are in my future which is why I went with a bit bigger than I needed. Even an exhaust housing would benefit you a great deal for EGT control.

I know Rusty had the DD2's in his, he can provide some experience from using those. I for one am very pleased with my Mach 2's, I live at altitude (4800 ft) and these are borderline as far as I can go for smoke control. I have to be careful with the right foot, when towing I can really get the smoke going!

If I keep my comp turned down the smoke is very manageable.

HMMmmmm

After looking at Don's website and various injector levels, I'm now wondering if maybe the 2's are do-able for my situation and setup? I'd like to get the maximum workable level for the towing I do, and with the BHAF, Comp and 4 inch exhaust - without having to watch the EGT's like a hawk - lotsa power is pretty pointless if you can't use it...

Rman, your comments are very helpful - hopefully Rusty will chime in...

Gary, I've got DD2s, and have installed/driven Mach1s.

The DD2s are about the limit for a good towing injector in the honed injector world. I have no EGT issues with them, even in the high elevation. This is because I don't tow. Porting the turbine housing/manifold helped drop about 100° as well. Even WOT, it doesn't hit 1200 until I'm breaking the law. Exhaust is stock, intake is BHAF.

That said, the F1s are in a class by themselves. When I installed the Mach 1 (65hp), in a truck like mine (ETH/DEE 01. 5 w/ EZ), the power felt the SAME as my truck with the DD2s. This is SOP and not scientific, but was interesting.

Also interesting was the smoke-- or the fact there wasn't any. It's like we couldn't MAKE it smoke, even here in the altitude.

The bottom end response of the F1 injectors make them feel like they make more hp then the rating.

Finally, the MPG of the F1s is very impressive. My truck with DD2s gets about 19-21 on the hwy running 65-75.

The truck with the F1s over the same route gets 21-23.

Given that the Mach 1s are such a steal at $500, I'd be debating WHICH F1 you want, not whether or not to go EDM or honed.

I'm not unhappy with my injectors, but there are better out there, and F1s are it.

My DD1 Jammers with Comp in EZ mode make good towing power, no smoke or EGT issues (4" and BHAF) and good mileage. SNOKING

I ran DD2's for a while, and liked them. But once you've run a set of Don's injectors their is no comparison.

I'm running 4's now with twins, and they smoke about the same as my DD2's did only with tons more power. Definitely go with Don's injectors. They are worth it.

Chris

Gary, I agree with Hohn. After several sets of injectors, stock, DD2's, F1 2. 4's, F1 3. 4's, F1 2. 4's again, and now F1. purrfects (custom made for me by DonM and probably about a 1. 6) run, don't walk to get the 1. 5's.

You've probably read my post about my trip to Yellowstone with the 2. 4's. Loaded 14k 5ver over Targhee pass (7200ft) and I did alright but did see 1350 degrees at the top and and had to back down. Now that I am done racing and done with bragging rights, I went to my present setup and picked up about 150 degrees cooler running temperature. Now you do know that I run the CaTCHER but I don't run with the box on. So you running 1. 5's with your box on 1x1, which would be about the equivalent you won't need anything more than that for towing.

Lastly, I know that Bob Wagner has offered to let you drive his truck and I think that I also offered but if I didn't make myself clear, I DO NOW offer. I will be at the NWBombers annual party on Saturday and will stay to around noon on Sunday. Hope to see you there.

Regards,

Roger

get them from Rip at www.sourceautomotive.biz. Heck, if he has them in stock he would even deliver them to Rob's for you. I believe he is leaving the Portland area around noon tomorrow (Friday)

Roger, I very much appreciate the offers you and Don made me - that sort of help, as well as replies in this thread are what makes membership here worth the money! Oo.

I was really deeply interested in making the NW Bombers outing, but just too many obstacles this time around, dunno if there is a similar get-together later in the year or not, but if there is, I'll absolutely plan to be there!

I have already called Rip for info and pricing for both the exhaust and injector upgrade - got basic info, and when he returns from the Bombers event, hope to drive up and get the goodies installed. Sure will be interesting to see the Dyno results after the upgrade! Oo. :D

Gray,

With Mach 1. 5's and comp on 5x5 I made 426hp and 927lb of torque. That was with the Dodgezilla and not the stock turbo, though. Don's injectors work very well, and Rip is a great person to deal with.

Paul

Doesn't look to be any question the 1. 5's would work well - remaining question is, would the 2's be TOO much for towing and EGT under load...

My gut feeling is that the 2's MIGHT be a stretch - I need a bit more input from other users - I don't really plan further power upgrades after this, and don't want to be forced to something like a larger turbo in order to live with, or get the most out of 2's. If that IS likely to be an issue, I'd rather go with 1. 5's...

Something about a piston meltdown from excessive EGT sorta ruins an outing! ;)

I have had DD II's and now have Don's Mach-2'S.

( I need to change my profile ).

I also have been running a HX35/14, not the HX40.

smoke is a lot less with the comp on the same setting, power is up. No, I haven't had it on a dyno, just the seat of pants.

My answer to your question is use the 2's if you are the only driver and are worried about EGT's and lift the foot.

I also need to say that I am dealing witha VP-44 issue right now and think it has been a problem for some time.

I bet when this gets sorted out , the power and mileage will really jump.

1.5's

Gary,I just bought the1. 5's from (jetpilot) you can run a member search and get with him, there seem's to be about a two week wait to get them. I hope there as good as every one say's they are I know this isn't first hand information but I can't wait to get mine. Oo. :D Oo. :D Don Barr

Fox,

ive been dealing with a vp44 dieing a slow death also code 216 occasionally, had it in but they wouldn't do anything yet, anyway Ihad a 2000 with a auto 4wd and went to my 02 HO 4wd,but haven't been impresed with milage, you said somthing about yours going up with a new pump,is it common to get crappy milage when the pumps on the wa out?also just put in DD'2s and haven't seen the milage increase everyone talks about??????? also loppy idle is this common with all larger injectors?? this tank I got 15mpg and have kept my right foot light, but travel short trips to work 12 miles around 65-68mph,with som warm up time, have got nothing over 18 on hwy. -not impressed... .

02 HO SB QC 4WD sport,285's,DD2's,comp as EZ,pillar guages,3. 55's,

Luke

Gary,

there is a NWBombers get together the first weekend in June. I hope to be making the drive (funds willing... or not for that matter... i gotta meet these guys!) on Friday the 3rd after work, returning late Sunday. It's pretty far north in Washington at the Hoss's, but should be worth it. If you wanna Bombvoy from the "right" side of the state, we could probably do it (I'll be in Redmond then).

Oh, and I just got some nifty new super-special M4's from Don in the mail today... they go in tomorrow afternoon! :D 500 RWHP, here I come!
