I think it's downright amazing how WELL the 2 thousand people who post here DO get along, with the number of people who get tossed numbering only a handful. From the perspective of being a moderator, it is THE last thing I, or any other moderator wants to do. When the mailbox has "reported post at TDR" emails in it, I dread opening them like I dread the idea of performing surgery on myself. I know, that if for some reason, peace can't seem to be maintained with diplomacy, if the war of words has attracted an audience already, then anything I do will be viewed by at least someone as wrong, as power trip. Yet, I think it's general consensus among ALL the moderators, that having to deal with someone who isn't fitting in or maintaining the peace is no power trip. It's stressful, exhausting, annoying, frustrating.
To me, at least, it's no different than the miserable old feeling I have come to know so well... The kind we felt every year when Christmas was divided up into two days, one with one half the family, one with the other, because you knew what would happen if you didn't.
And yes, if we really do think peace can be maintained by just deleting a thread and asking for cooperation in email, we'll do it. I have. But when people get combative, when they refuse to fit in, for the sake of the rest of us, even those who will miss those gone, I really don't see much choice.
I've seen plenty of forums with the "war" forum... It never stays there. One person will bait others until it spills into the rest. They end up removing MORE people than we do here. I think it's the price we pay to have 11,000 registered members, and more than 2000 active forum participants. Is it that large? Or would the alternative be worse? I know which side I'm on by experience. I just wish it wasn't so. [/B]
