Gart Sports suspends gun sales at its stores around the country

Tuesday, September 11, 2001

From wire and staff reports

Gart Sports suspended the sale of all firearms nationwide Tuesday.

"We sell firearms for the sportsman and the sportswomen and are not at all interested in fueling irrational acts," said Doug Morton, the company's president and chief executive officer. Store managers had reported higher-than normal ammunition sales in Colorado and Texas on Tuesday morning, he said.

Gart, based in Denver, operates 120 sporting goods stores in 16 states.

Kmart Removes Guns From Stores

TROY, Mich. (AP)--Kmart Corp. temporarily removed ammunition and firearms from its 2,100 stores nationwide on Tuesday in the wake of attacks in New York and Washington, the company said.

Spokeswoman Julie Fracker said the decision was made Tuesday morning.

``The safety of our customers and our associates is our first priority,'' the company said in a statement. ``Kmart extends its deepest sympathies to the people affected by today's tragic incident. ''

Fracker said it wasn't clear how much the move would cost the company. She said the company would monitor the situation to determine when sales would resume.

I beleive it Murle. Gart and Kmart are wrong in their decision to do such a thing. It says right in Garts press release they dont beleive that sportsmen would cause trouble. Double speak huh?

I will remember this.

Don~

What? You're not smart enough to realize that terrorists buy their guns from K-Mart? Geeze, how could you be so niave!!! I like Walmart better anyhow.

Wal-Mart is no better. They don't have handguns anymore. You sportsman don't need handguns, remember... .

What next... No cameras? You might take pictures of naked kids.

Think about. You have the RIGHT to keep and Bear Arms.

Wal-Mart and K-mart and Gart do not have the right to say who can and cannot have them. And when you can and cannot have them.

They do have the right to sell them or not sell them. And I have the right to support them or not.

I chose NOT!!!!

My biggest fear is that there will be mob mentality attacks on people of middle eastern descent. Take a look at one to the posts about gas prices.

The fact that somebody that has never owned or shot a gun can go out and buy a firearm after something like this scares the crap out of me.

Go to K-Mart's web page and send them an e-mail.

Until martial law is declared, we still live under the Constitution. Tell them that you have rights as an American citizen and don't need weinies like them making your decisions. I did!

No one has taken away your rights or made a single choice for you. They have made choices for themselves and exercised their own rights not to sell this particular product. Now, if you don't like that, make your choices and exercise your rights NOT to shop there anymore.

Disagree with them all you want, but don't accuse K-mart or Garts of taking away your rights or making choices for you - they have neither the power nor the desire to do that.

Don't let extrodinary events take away your rationality and intelligence. You can exercise your rights to purchase firearms and ammo elsewhere.

And before you start flaming me, I absolutely believe and support your and my rights to purchase and own and use guns. I go to work (military) every day to ensure that right.

Occurances like this is the reason I keep at least 100 rounds of ammo for every gun I have, as well as a good supply of black power for my muzzleloaders. I was a boy scout, always be prepared for the worst and hope it never comes or don't prepare and it will.....

With all the sorrow/disbelief of the last 24 hours at least something caused me to laugh out loud.

Guys, get off your damn high horse about the 2nd Amendment. I did not say that these people should not be allowed to own a gun. I question their ability to safely use a deadly weapon and whether they'll kill themselves or some other innocent bystander.

Joel summed it up pretty well. These businesses did not infringe upon your rights. The owners are exercising their rights.

Jumbo Jet:

Believe it or not, martial law was declared in this country in 1933. That was the only way FDR said he could get the coutry out of the depression. Then he discovered WAR. Every president has continued this "tradition" since. Watch FEMA very carefully. Thats Jimmy Carter's sweetheart. If an National emergency is ever declared, the goverenment is on the sidelines and FEMA rules.

Watch very carefully.

Guns?

I have been reading that knives were supposingly used not guns. Guess I better lock the Henckles up.

Seriously, there is a lot of anger now and a good many people want to go kill someone, anyone. But the fact is just as in Korea, Vietnam, somewhat in Iraq, the ememy is not all that distinguishable from the friend. First restraint then the facts then retaliation to those who have it coming.

I for one never said they were taking our rights away. I said don't support these business for making a wrong decision about our rights. I believe these types of business, by their actions, will not stand up for what is right.

Thomas Jefferson said: "The beauty of the 2nd admendment is that we will never need it until they try to take it away. "

Brian,

If you were referring to my post, I apologize if it sounded irrational - I went back and added a "funny" face to it so people would see the sarcasm intended:

"A few of us here at work wondered about some of people running stations around here being brothers, cousins, etc. Seriously, I'm going to start giving my business only to stations that I know are owned by full-blooded Americans (like the ones that own the full service station above). Maybe this sounds like stereotyping, racism, etc. - it's not! I'm just going to pay more attention to making sure I help my fellow Americans. "

But I meant what I said about doing more to support fellow Americans - I know that I could not go to any of their countries and start a business and be supported the way they are over here. Just my personal beliefs at work here.

If you weren't referring to my post, I apologize again.

ALSO - I quit supporting K-Mart over the "stinky" Rosie O'Donnell (sp?) fiasco - they'll never see one red cent from me.
