Don't mean to hijack snoking, but what is the percentage vote out there right now on the 216. Is this code(216) 100% mean the VP is a out or on the way. Has anyone had a 216 code that had a different problem? Thanks

I think the dead peddle and a 216 is a sure sign that the VP44 is short lived. SNOKING

The email string going back and forth with DC is getting interesting. They are really stonewalling and will not tell me where in the Warranty Information Booklet is states that the Cummins Engine Warranty starts at the "in service date". The last round was that they said to look at chart on page 275 of the owners manual. That page also contains a statement about the see our Warranty Information Booklet.

The fun continues. SNOKING

In the next round I am going to ask them if I can publish the email string on the TDR site!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It seems to me that the Owners Manual is interesting, but meaningless, in this fight! I think the red type in the following says it all.

§ 701. 3 Written warranty terms.

(a) Any warrantor warranting to a consumer by means of a written warranty a consumer product actually costing the consumer more than $15. 00 shall clearly and conspicuously disclose in a single document in simple and readily understood language, the following items of information:
(1) The identity of the party or parties to whom the written warranty is extended, if the enforceability of the written warranty is limited to the original consumer purchaser or is otherwise limited to persons other than every consumer owner during the term of the warranty;
(2) A clear description and identification of products, or parts, or characteristics, or components or properties covered by and where necessary for clarification, excluded from the warranty;
(3) A statement of what the warrantor will do in the event of a defect, malfunction or failure to conform with the written warranty, including the items or services the warrantor will pay for or provide, and, where necessary for clarification, those which the warrantor will not pay for or provide;
(4) The point in time or event on which the warranty term commences, if different from the purchase date, and the time period or other measurement of warranty duration;

Well, Holly from DC called me and we got nowhere. I asked if I could post her email and she said no, and I said put it in an email and she said she would. She did not so here it is: (Note it starts at the bottom and comes up the page. )

Original Message Follows:

Page 275 also says:

"Warranty Information

See Your DaimlerChrysler Motors Corporation Warranty

Information Booklet for information on warranty coverage

and transfer of warranty. "

Warranty Information book on page 4 states that "The warranties

contained

in this booklet are the only express warranties that DaimlerChrusler

Motors

Corporation

makes for your truck".

On page 12 of the booklet, it states that the Cummins Diesel Engine

Limited

Warranty begins at the end of the 3/26 Basic Limited Warranty period.

*** So, AGAIN I ask where in the Warranty Information Booklet does it

state

that the warranty begins at the in service date. ***

Because of your stonewalling on this issue, I have ordered a

remanufactured

VP44 Injection Pump from Midwest Fuel Injection and will be submitting a

demand letter for reimbursement when the truck has been repaired.

Was at my local small NAPA getting a set of crows feet and a 19 mil wrench to make into a shorty and they had a CodeScout 700 on sale for 69 bucks, so I bought it and was able to reset my 216 code. It does not however read the PCM codes, just the ECM. I cut the 19m wrench in half and then cut a piece out of the box end, to make a tubing wrench. So I have a short 19M open end and a short almost box wrench.

SNOKING (Bob: I know should have bought a Smarty!)

Well I tackled the UPS driver in town just before lunch and he gave me the pump. Started at around 1PM and finish around 5:30 PM. Made two trips to NAPA, for bolts the first time and Torx bit the second time. I ended up making a puller out of a heavy piece of angle iron. Drilled two holes in it and ran grade 5 metric bolts in with a few washers to easy turning the bolts. Steering wheel puller would not cut it, as I was streaching the bolts that came with it. Put the intack air horn on twice to soon. First time removed for the APPS to go back in place and second time to tighen number two injector tube.

It start back up without to much trouble. I only removed injector tubes 1,2 and 4 as someone suggested. I did not have to bleed any injector lines to get in started.

NOW for the RESULTS:

Yeah Yeah Yeah.

The truck is running smoother than it has been AND

IT HAS A BUNCH MORE POWER than it had before swapping the pump.

:D :D Oo. Oo. :D :D

Only 52K on the truck. Trying to decide if I want to make a run at DC with the 5 year engine warranty starts after the 36 month one, as someone else posted. My pump has never been tapped and fuel pressure has always been good.

SNOKING

Sadly, after just randomly checking my codes yesterday a 0216 and a 1693 were plainly visible before my disbelieving eyes. Just over 50K miles.

I think I will order a pump and maybe wait for a dead pedal to replace it. :{

When is the in service date for your truck. If you are at 50K and less the 5 years, it is a none issue on the Cummins engine warranty for you. ON EDIT: Just looked at you sig! You are your own warranty station. Talk to Rib about a pump!

Depending on where you purchase a pump, the core charge might be an issue to order now and install later. I got mine for MWFI and they give you 30 days to return the old pump without charging you the core charge.

Yeah.....

I just told myself about a week ago, how nice my truck was running and how happy I was with it.

LOL ---> Jinx ---> Urch ---> :)

Well fuel mileage to back up just got 18. 539 MPG on combined driving for the first couple hundred miles on the new pump. SNOKING

Reply from DC

Well I got my sorry charlie letter for DC today. They have still not pointed me to the place in the warranty information booklet that states that the 5/100 Cummins engine warranty begins at in service date, as page 12 states that it begins at the end to the 3/36 basic warranty. Next step is a complaint with the Washington State Attorney Generals office. SNOKING

After this letter, I mailed one back with specific dates of delivery, basic warranty and Cummins engine warranty asking them to tell me where I was wrong. I stated that if page twelve of the Warranty Booket was wrong that they have had 6 years to issue a correction. Today I got another reply. "Your letter does not contain any additional information that would cause us to change our previous decision. " So more stonewalling. I printed out the Washington State Athorney General Consumer Complaint Form and will begin filling out that form and making copies of all the correspondence. It would appear that they know I am correct, or they would point out where I am wrong, instead of the repeated stonewalling. SNOKING

D/C won't give up easily! Going after the local dealer as I did seems likes a much easier path.

You mentioned in an earlier correspondence that "small claims is a local issue" in Washington. What does that mean? The State of California makes it real easy to sue in my county if the original contract occurred in my county.

There must be some hungry class-action type attorney somewhere to keep D/C honest.

Well, I just mailed in my complain to the Washington State Attorney General Office. Included a printout of the warranty booket (thanks Thomas), and all the emails and letters that have gone back and forth. Glad DC retain part ownership, it will make it harder for them to run from this issue.

Also called and left a message for the General Manager of the local dealership that first refused warranty, as they are listed as a secondary business on the complain forms.

When I told a paralegal friend what the warranty booket says, she said they do not have a leg to stand on.
