I read in a tdr that the center support are miss alined and need shimming. I have shimmed it some. I was wondering how munch any one has shimmed theres? When pulling a load it shutters on take off. It has done it scents I got it at 20k miles. On a trip back from texas it all of a sudden got munch worse. I have also read that it is common for them to need u joints around 40k miles, mine has 45k on it. They dont look bad, I havent taken them out yet to look at them. Any Ideas?

I would guess it's the driveline angles then.

Mine shutters also, but I just drive with a soft foot until the load gets moving.

There is a TSB for it.

Driveline shudder can be cured with a set of Tuff Country traction bars from JC Whitney. Cheap and easy to install if you have any mechanical skills at all. They stop the rear springs from "winding up" during acceleration and placing the U-joints in a a bind. Makes the rear suspension function like a 4 link where the only motion allowed is vertical instead of rotational as far as the rear axle housing is concerned. They certainly worked for me, at least. Had driveline shudder on takeoff and also severe axle hop in slick or loose conditions --- now it's completely gone.

SUBJECT:

Launch Shudder

OVERVIEW:

This bulletin involves adjusting the propeller shaft working angles.

MODELS:

2003 - 2004 (DR) Ram Truck

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a two piece rear driveshaft.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

A vehicle may exhibit a drive line shudder or vibrations while accelerating from a stop. The

condition is most noticeable under heavy throttle acceleration and is usually only present a

low speeds (below 25 m. p. h. ).

DIAGNOSIS:

Vehicles equipped with a two piece driveshaft are designed to minimize reaction forces

which result from the universal joint transmitting torque at an angle. These forces can not

be eliminated entirely because of the necessity to compromise joint angle selection

between curb and design loading conditions. When subjected to this vibration, the vehicle

experiences a shudder type disturbance, generally occurring less than 25 mph. This

disturbance will increase as the suspension moves further from its design load (typically

two front passengers). The forces are also torque sensitive, which means the disturbance,

will be highest under wide open throttle.

U-joint angles change depending upon the amount of weight applied to the vehicle bed,

therefore u-joint angle readings may need to be taken with different vehicle loads in order

to obtain a satisfactory compromise. The vehicle should be evaluated under the loaded

condition that produces the objectionable disturbance.

I took the shaft out and the rear joint was rusted solid. Thanks for the bulletin.

If its the 04. 5 that show in your sig you are covered by the 7/70 drivetrain warranty 100. 00 dollar deductible . Make Dodge fix it. Take them out for the test drive and prove to them or they will tell you there's nothing wrong.

True, but the joint is only $28 and is better quality then the factory units

JCasper: Yes, those bars. And yes, they work with air bags. In fact, you may need the bags because I don't think they'll work with stock overloads in place, so you'll probably need the bags for load capacity. I have both the airbags and the Traction bars on my truck. No launch shudder at all.

The dealer replaced my rearmost ujoint at 55K with a DC approved part (factory). It's still in at 209K. The problem IMHO is a lack of grease at the assembly plant. The tech who did mine at 55K must have used enough.

The local dodge dealer knows me, I owen a truck and tractor repair shop. They wouldnt give me a hard time, but I know they would use some cheep part from a part store. Spicer does not make one that will fit the best I can find quick is neapco.

actually we always used mopar u-joints unless the customer brought their own, and you don't grease them when you put them in they are already greased.

Ya AAM said the same thing when they shipped this stuff to mexico to be assembled into the trucks

I check my truck with a gooseneck with 14k on it and didnt see a nought pinon rap to be a problem.

We service fleet trucks for the power company and have not had a nappa precision u joint hold up well yet. I got a spicer part number from a nother post. Going to try it, had good luck in the mud drags with spicer.
