Yeah they didn't pull the shaft that I saw, and I'm guessing that to shim it all they would have had to do is unbolt the carrier and put in the shim... I'll check it out ASAP

Rumble strips? Way back when my first rear joint siezed, I literally stopped and got out, expecting to find a driveshft dragging the ground. It's worse when hot too.

I just bought an 04 with 47,000 miles. I have been getting a vibration problem and was blaming the new tires and wheels I bought and put on the truck. I took my driveshaft off and could not feel any problem in the u-joints. I went ahead and removed the u-joints and they appear to be really dry. I had to use the torch to heat the part of the driveshaft that is holding the caps. I did not get any grease pushing out of the u-joints when applying the heat. I am headed to get the new, greasable joints this morning.

Mine failed by 72k (all of them)... I had the rear driveshaft joints replaced with NeapCo's (greaseable), replaced the entire front shaft, and replaced the axle joints with Precisions (greaseable). Every single one had at least one dry cap.

When my rear joints started going bad, I was in South Carolina... started as an annoying squeak that got worse, then went away. On the trip home, it started to really seize... felt like the rear diff was coming apart. They hum and vibrate bad when they seize... mine were bad enough I could not flex the joints by hand.

Do you feel this vibration all the time, or just at slow speeds? My truck feels like it's going to shake apart when I'm on the brakes coming to a stop.

Some also get posi shudder even tho AAM axels supposedly can't do that but they do. Any difference on left turns from a stop or from cold to after a highway run. Its not always u/joints. Seen several friends trucks go 150k with no joint issues and traded in at that mileage. I had a issue at low speeds HOT. Pulled my shaft, pulled joints. Lots of grease and were fine. Ruined them pulling them and had to install new spicers. THEN added $6bucks of posi additive(Purolator)and shudder cured in five miles of driving.

I have an '06 with 42k on it, my u-joints did exactly what you describe... . I'd have to go with steved on this, if I was in your shoes those u joints would be gone. U-joints are cheap enough just my . 02.

Well, sounds like I have exactly the same issue. Silky smooth above 20 mph under load or not. Worst if I'm braking or coasting down from higher speeds. Used a sirometer and measured 22hz. I can actually see the drive shaft oscillate . I'll be replacing all 3 joints and the carrier bearing assembly over the holiday. i'll post a reply with my findings. . btw 49k miles.

root cause found

Yup, rear u joint is totally seized on the rear diff drive flange. My local parts supplier was not able to source grease able joints. Anyone out there been able to find a grease able joint?
