Dave, I'll leave the fancy computer stuff to you, like even adding the "smiles". When it comes to these computers, it's a miracle i can even get this far. As for the "crying", I'll go BOO HOO BOO HOO!!

Post Lesson

Ok John, I hear ya. It took me awhile to catch on too. When you're typing wherever you place the cursor is where the smile will be placed if you move the mouse over the "smile" you want and click on the symbol you want (like the cryer) :{, the smile will be placed there. The computer puts a wierd symbol that represents what the cryer is wherever the curser is when you click on that smile until the post or reply is submitted. Then it looks like you see it on the threads. See... it's easier than replacing that mirror :-laf .

To do a quote I just first highlight with the cursor what I want to quote. To highlight take you mouse and left click but hold the left click down at the begin of what you want to copy. Now drag your mouse (still holding the mouse left click button down) over the words you want to copy til you reach the end of it and then release the left cursor. What you want copied is now highlighted in blue. If you want to change what you highlighted just repeat that step again and what you highlighted before will disappear as soon as you click the mouse on the new part to copy. What is highlighted will dissapper as soon as you click your mouse anywhere..... then you just start over highlighting. Now you want to copy the blue highlited material to the clipboard (don't worry it will just happen if you follow the steps).

To copy to the clipboard go to top of your screen and click your mouse on "File" and when the drop down menu appears click on "copy". Note: It won't work if you don't first use the mouse to highlight what you want to copy (it will be in blue). OR use the short cut for the copy to clipboard which is; hold the "CTRL" key down while hitting the "C" key on your keyboard (after you have highlighted what you want to copy). This copies what you have highlighted to a clipboard... don't matter if you know what I'mtalking about just do the steps and it just works. What ever is copied to the "clipborad" when you do the copy, will stay there until you do another copy to overright what was in there previously or you shutdown your computer.

Now you want to paste what you copied to the "secret clipboard" into your post. Place your cursor where you want to paste into your post. Go up to the top of the screen again and click on "File" again and click on it then look for "Paste" and click on "paste" with your mouse and what you copied is now pasted (that means copied) into your thread... . whereever the cursor was left on your post. The shortcut keyboard command for "paste" is hold "CTRL" key while hitting the "V" key and it will paste.

Give me a call sometime and I'll help you out. Might be easier on the phone... 559 642-2440 or PM. We should arrange a meet time first. There are other easy tricks I could show you but everyone else is getting bored with this so maybe I could PM you.

There is your short lesson on posting.

On to the next job and good luck. Anything I can help with let me know.

b :)  :{ Oo. :D :-laf :-laf

Thanks for the additional information. :D I'lll try it out sometime. :-laf As

for being easier than the mirror repair... :p

PS :--) Dave, I think I got it!!! WHEEE!!! Oo.

Smiles are easier than Mirror Repair!

J Schoik:

ALL RIGHT John..... Oo. Oo. :-laf :D ;)

Go to post a thread again and follow this... ... If you want to make something bold first highlight it in blue like I told you then hit the "B" up above and... . VWALA. . what ever you highlighted will be in bold. Same thing for "I' which is italics or "U" for underline. Just about everything requires you to highlight the text and then click on the action desired. If you don't want it bold later then just backspace/delete/erase the symbols from that text. Play with it and see.

Now you see the B and I and U up above and all the rest of the stuff to the right? Take your mouse and just rool it over them symbols and stop... a little window below will tell you what that symbol is for. For example... roll your mouse over the "B"and stop on top of it ... the window below it will say "bold". Works for all the "smiles" to.

When you click your mouse on it it will do the action ("bold" for example) on whatever you have highlighted beforehand. Now look at the "B" again and follow the symbols to the right until you get to the last one in that row on the far right. That is the "quote" symbol. It looks kinda like a piece of paper with writing on it but very small.

The previous post I had told you how to copy and paste what you wanted to quote into your post area... . but I forgot to tell you how to actually make the quote. Well that quote symbol does it. After you copied and pasted into your document you then highlight it all and when you click on the Quote symbol it puts the quote window around whatever is highlighted.

Here I will copy and paste (use the down arrows and up arrows to the right to find the post you want to copy). Or open a 2nd internet window with that thread in it. You must realize that what you copied in one window goes to the same clipboard on your computer, so you can paste whatever you copied in one internet window into the other internet window. This is what I copied and pasted from your post before using the "quote" symbol:

Thanks for the additional information. I'lll try it out sometime. As

for being easier than the mirror repair...

This is what it looks like after I highlight the above lines and then hit the "quote" symbol:

Thanks for the additional information. I'lll try it out sometime. As

for being easier than the mirror repair...

Play with it a bit, don't worry about hurting anything... after all. . its not your truck... Right!

Lesson # 2 in posting.

Enjoy,

Dave

Dave, the computer I am presently using (at home) doesn't show the File, Edit, ect. line at the top. :{ But I have somewhat of an idea of what you're talking about, I think  . I'll have to wait until I get to work and see if the computer program there does what your's does. Until then, I'll fix the just discovered broken exhaust hanger & clamp on my truck. I don't think I need the membership's help on this one :-laf . Until the next time, or the next repair... :D

John, What browser are you using to get on the internet? I'm using "Internet Explorer" for my browser. The "File" etc... is at the top of the Internet Explorer browser window at the top left of the window. It's above the "Address" line where the current internet site address is. The top of the screen has, from left to right, File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, Help. Hope that helps.

Good luck with the exhaust and alternator.

Dave, my computer at work shows everything you were talking about. :D I don't know why the one at home doesn't. I'll have to check out the one at home and see what's going on with it. I printed everything you told me just in case. ;) Thanks for ALL the help. John

PS The exhaust system fix was the cheapest fix so far this winter. :D Just 1 hanger and 2 clamps, less than $10. 00 :D :D I NEVER heard of the catalytic converter having a clamp in front of it until now. That was one that rotted off. I have a friend who owns an auto salvage yard ( not junk yard ). He offered to give me the alternator, but I don't know how long it would last, I'll still buy the new one.

John,

I have another browser called "Netscape" and it has the same thing "File. . etc" as Interner Explorer. Maybe you have an "Apple" computer at home? I don't know anything about them . Remember I told you the shortcut for copy is "CNTL + C" and paste is "CNTL + V"? Well when you go to "Edit" and then "Copy" or "Paste", look to the right of it and you will see the shortcut commands listed. For example, Go to "Edit" and then next to "Copy" you'll see ... . "Copy ... ... ... Ctrl+c" , and for Paste you'll see "Paste... ..... Ctrl+V". Its right there for you if you forget.

Well, good to see the exhaust fix was cheap and easy :D . Not too much is cheap or easy on these trucks :-laf . Go for the used alternator and it might last a long time. Replace it if/when it fails. If I had easy access to cheap used parts I'd probably go for it. Its too much of hassle for me. ;)

I'm in the middle of the hydroboost replacement now :{ . Tomorrow I'm going to try replacing the power steering fluid with synthetic "Redline" from NAPA. Here's hoping I don't have trouble getting the air out of the lines  .

Take care John. Hope the mirror fix lasts long time. When mine fails I'll go for some better towing mirrors  .

Good luck,

Dave

Dave, I have Microsoft as an ISP. I forgot which program it is as I'm at work now. The computer is a Dell, & Microsoft came with it.

As for the alternator, I had to rely on this friend to come up with a replacement power angle piston for my snowplow a few weeks back. I figure a new one about $150-$200. He GAVE it to me!! :D :D I don't want to use him for the alternator too, as his co-owner brother was not happy :{ about the price of the piston. :-laf Besides, I bet the alternator won't come out of a diesel, hence it won't be as strong.

On the power steering fluid replacement, try using a "turkey baster" to suck the old fluid out of the resevoir, then fill w/ new fluid. There will still be old fluid left, but not much.

Sounds like you should have "internet Explorer" as a browser. If you click on the big blue "e" on your desktop to get to the internet, that is internet explorer. The top of my internet exployer window is purple blue and says"TDR Roundtable - Edit Post - Microsoft Internet Exployer". Forget the "edit " function and Just use the keyboard shortcut way of copying and pasting. Try highlighting something and while it is in blue, then hit the "CTRL" key on your keyboard while hitting "C" key on your keyboard. That will copy what you highlighted to the clipboard. Then put your cursor in your thread where you want it and hit "CTRL" key while hitting the "V" key to paste what you copied (from the clipboard) into your thread. You don't need to find the "Edit" function at the top... . just use the keyboard commands... . it should work. Thats how I do this quote below plus using the highlight and then "quote" function I told you about. I will scroll on the far right of my window border near the top right (just under "Go) there is an up arrow. Below the arrow is a bar (scroll bar) that I can click and hold while I drag down to see all the posts on this thread I'm replying to. Note: there is the same type "scroll bar" in the "reply Window" that you type in when you post a thread. It just scrolls in the post window your typing in. The "scroll bar" at the far right scrolls the whole thread showing all the replys.

Stop scrolling at the last post you made that I'm replying to. Then highlight what I want to copy for my quote and using the keyboard commands do the copy. Then grab the "scroll bar"on the far right and click(grab) and pull it up to my reply window, now do "CTRL+V" and here it is:

Now I'll do "CTRL+V" here. and highlight all that and hit the "quote" symbol up above and here is the quote:

I would not use an alternator that wasn't out of the Dodge diesel either. Good find on the "piston"

On the power steering fluid replacement, try using a "turkey baster" to suck the old fluid out of the resevoir, then fill w/ new fluid. There will still be old fluid left, but not much.

I just pulled off the return line and capped the power steering pump return line port. Ran the removed return line into a bucket. All the other hoses are connected, so when I crank or start the engine briefly it will quickly suck of the fliud and dump it into the bucket. I'll keep refilling the power steering resouvoir until all the fliud looks clean coming out into bucket. At least thats the theory of how it should work. I'll try it today and let you know.

Good luck with everthing your working on. I love working on my truck.

I just got done working on a 9" snowstorm. The replacement piston once again preformed flawlessly,as did the floppy mirror repair. :D Wish I couild say the same about the alternator. Good luck with the fluid change.

Glad the piston is holding up for ya and the mirror. 9 inches of snow! Its been over 80 here :p ! Pretty unusual for here. . its usually about 50-55.

Well... I finished the hydroboost today Oo. Oo. . Glad I got a new one from Hydratech. I had no trouble with the unit and I just removed the return line and pumped all the fluid out while putting the new synthetic in. Had the front jacked up so I could turn the wheel back and forth to help pump the fluid. I used 3+ quarts, but I need to get more and keep pumping it out til all the old is gone. Wasn't as bad a job as I trhought  . I have pics so I may post a thread to show others.

See ya :D

Dave

Dave, I noticed you "forgot" to tell me a few things while I did the mirror repair
So, there were screws holding the cover on... I couldn't remember that.
And...
I forget about that too. Good point

But it was nice of you to say...

Thanks for adding the other details about the mirror job that I forgot.

I'm trying my hand at posting like you suggested instead of working on the truck... :-laf

NOTE: How about that!! This is my qoute of you quoting me..... Geeez!

WAAAHOOO Oo. Oo. ..... John, You did it :D. Man I am impressed ;)! You hung in there and figured it out. This will help you when you post again, so you can be clearer on your threads. Man... It was hard for me trying to give you the details necessary for you to do all that, but its probably harder on you on your end to figure out what the heck I'm talking about. I just couldn't give up, cause I knew you wanted to do it.

YOU ARE THE POST KING now Buddy Remember, if you want to,you can do bold and underline and Italics on the same group of words... just highlight what you want and and then one at a time add each function. Like This!.

Oh... If you make a post and misspell or want to change, after you submit it... just go to the post that you did and click on "EDIT" at the bottom right of each post window... next to "QUOTE" and "QUICK REPLY". The "EDIT" is only there on a particular post by you. . but not other users posts/replys. You can do "EDIT" as many times as you want... . I do it alot, because I screw up alot :{ !

Next. . we'll try adding pics to you post  ... . tell me when your ready  . Helps to have a digital camera. Took me awhile to figure it out and I'm still learning. Great to have the camera to take pics of your truck before and after so you can see how to put things back together. Our cheapy $150 camera lets me download them to my computer USB port, then I can crop them to fit in the post. Its... WAY COOL  !

On to the BOMBS for our trucks..... OH YEAH Oo. :-laf !

I wouldn't go as far as being "The post king!!" I think it was more like "dumb luck". As for the problem with my home computer, when I log on, I was clicking on the little purple butterfly. I tried clicking on the internet explorer "E" after and it did what you said it should. :D After that it was all trial & error (lots of errors). :{ At least I didn't bust a knuckle like I do on the truck. :-laf

Dave, I REALLY appreciate the time you took to guide me through all of this. Oo. You've made this website lots more fun for me. :D :D Thanks, John

John,

Its so great to see you make it through all that banter of mine and now understand how to do a little more than when you started. I really enjoyed helping you learn... and believe me. . its all trial and error for me to... . but, hopefully, you can learn from what I learned.

Sorry... . To you other guys for boring you with all these "Posting Lessons" :p , but John at least has learned from it :D .

It feels good to see you improve as much as you have John... GREAT JOB :D

Dave, don't know if you're still watching this thread, but today I FINALLY got to do the alternator replacement!!! :D Oo.

It took me about 4 hrs. because of the plow hydraulics having to be R & R'ed, but after that, it was pretty easy. ;) I was also able to fix a few minor leaks in the hydraulics and replace & tighten up a few bolts. :D

For anyone interested, I bought my alternator at an Auto Zone parts store near me. The only concern if one of you has to replace yours is to make sure they sell you one rated at 136 amps, not the 120 listed in their computer. Their computer shows the gas motors having an optional 136 amp alternator, which when put side-by-side are identical looking. I paid the little extra for the lifetime warranty, just in case... ;)

I'm sorry to the membership for the end of this thread for being off topic with computer lessons being given to me by a VERY gracious Dave M. :D

My thanks to the moderator for allowing this to go on the way it did. ;)

Dave M. , once again, THANKS for the lesons!! I guess I graduated from computer moron to computer idiot!! :-laf

Now that my repairs are complete for now... :-laf

Yeah... Sorry for getting off track... and many thanks for you guys letting us get off track for a good purpose. Next time we will use the "PM" and handle it offline. I'll PM you John and discuss how to do that.

Dave M. , once again, THANKS for the lesons!!... ... ...

Glad I could help Ya.

Hey Professor Dave M. - THANKS! Now I'm a TDR junkie!! :-laf I'll try "working" on the computer as I worked on the truck earlier. Hopefully I won't bust any knuckles here. :-laf WOW!! I think my knuckles stopped bleeding !! :D

My truck is "BOMBED" enough! I'm having enough "FUN" keeping it running. :-laf

If you want to see my "final exam", look in "General Diesel Topics" - "Products & Accessories" - "Engine & Transmission". I have a thread started- "Mobil 1 OK or what". I used a lot of your "lessons" in it. You'll be proud of your "student".

Now, on to the soon needed O/C.
