hello to all

I took on a small job for the snap on tool man that stops at the shop he is involved in a car show in billings on fathers day. these are the trophys we made for this years show

last years were pistons with a 1/2 drive ratchet and a 3/4 wrench welded together this years pistons with 1/2 ext and a 3/4 wrench also the pistons got powder coated red.

I trying to come up with ideas for next year thinking about two sets of diesel pistions and ???

heres a picture of this years trophys

it seems to plug filters at about 1000 miles I have the last two that he changed and will cut them apart on friday the size of the filters is a factor in this problem I think just not sure this is the only truck running this pump that is using veg oil

The bus I ran a few summers ago had a FASS for the veg side of the system and we could get that to go over 1000 miles on a filter, and that was feeding an 8V92TA.

filters /air dog

hello to all

The fass filter on the (150 pump) system will last me over 12,000 miles if the oil is clean before centrifuging the filter would only last 1500 miles.

heres what I think the problems is with the airdog filters and this also is true for the smaller fass system (95 pump) system.

the water sep filter on the air dog is called an ws100 the person selling them in town thought they were a 100 mesh ss screen inside the filter I cut the top off of one and found PAPER filter media about half the size of the filter

this will work if its set up right

the fuel filter lookes to be the same paper media this is fine the 2 micron filter is the the problem. you can get 10 micron filters from air dog this would be good to use if your burning VO.

the filter system is small I understand wanting a smaller unit, but it has drawbacks !!!

I did find filters that will fit on the air dogs and will be testing them soon one set will be going on a truck next week these are baldwin filters and have both the water sep and fuel filter.

also found a bigger fuel filter 10 micron that will fit also a baldwin filter cost is about 11. 00 better than the 25. 00 + from air dog

Cheaper filters for the fass 95 system are out there but the filter mount on the water sep and the dip tube on the fuel filter need to be changed

injectors (ouch)

hello to all

its been a wild ride lately

the 2004 dodge is back running if you remember a few years back dodge replaced all six injectors after one of them went bad this was at 80,000 + miles

we took the truck to yellowstone park on the 4 July for a fun day drive and to look at the snow we had record amounts this winter could have gone sleding on the 4 of July in the beartooths this year.

after this trip the truck started to smoke really bad at an idle this went on for a week and then I took it in to be tested it showed that two injectors were weak number 2 and 3 so we took them out and sent them away for testing

this took about a week and then the news came that the return flows were all over the place and the spray pattern was not good on them the out come was I need new injectors

so at 123,375. the 2nd set was toast dodge puts in remans if you want to know

we bought new injectors with 50 hp tips

of course they said it was the fuel I use my self I AM NOT SURE the inside of the engine (cylinder bores) look great zero damage valves looked good also we used a small borascope to look in side the engine before we put the injectors in .

there will be some changes to the induction on this truck as soon as I can afford them to help clean the injectors.

All the other truck are running just great

thanks for reading

Hello ken and others

I dont think the fuel was the cause either,

My thoughts are that when dodge gets a ENGINE in with close to the magic 100,000 mile mark they pop in some parts that will get the engine out of coverage then its fair game on the pocket book. Do I blame them NO!

thats just the way most companys are.

this fuel works great and I will keep burning it its cheap and worth the time it takes.

I dont have any pictures of the injectors they look a little dirty and the tips were the worst what I am thinking is water/meth injection to aid in cleaning the tips of the injectors the rest of the engine looked great thats better news I think.

just looking for the right priced one to install on the 2004 test truck

(yes thats a hint , (any takers ))

update

Hello to all

Sorry its been so long between posts.

The truck that are running the fuel are all running great the only issue is the plugging of filters and again its only one truck.

Its been 6 years of doing this and i have learned a lot the biggest thing is keeping the fuel clean this is the most important thing out there today EVEN WITH STORE BOUGHT FUEL.

after replacing the injectors in my 04 I thought about changing the blend (IE doing away with the gasoline and using diesel fuel at twice the amount of gasoline) after making one batch and tring it in all the trucks and talking to the owners of the trucks we decided that diesel was not what we wanted, the engines started harder and just did not perform as good whit this type of fuel

so there will be some changes to the process but the blend will stay the same for now

the biggest change will be a filtering system added to the gasoline side of the fuel making system and we will be adding more filtering to the used oil side before going to the centrifuge.

these are small changes but should make for cleaner fuel in the long run

cj ; pardon me for trying to catch up, but what is wvo and making your own fuel????

thom

Waste Vegetable Oil collected from a local restaurant. Then filtered, filtered, filtered (or centrifuged if you are CJ Hall), heated up to drive off any water, then treated with your own blend of additives and voila! Your own veggie fuel!

Enjoy the smell of savings!

Ken

that's it in a nut shell

wow, don't think i could have said it better.

it sounds easy but its a little harder than what ken said the savings are great the time to do it could get out of hand but with 4 dollars and change at the pump its worth it .

if you need more info it's all in this thread

Also time is the best filter. The cleanest oil I ever had was a tote that was left outside over the winter from Nov to about March. When i pumped it off, it was so crystal clear you thought it was new oil... ..... !

Ken

Hello Lmoore1624

My thoughts are yes it will be fine the only thing is the filtering of the oil

this is true with ANY oil .

I will be trying all different types of oil veg, mineral, man made oil this Centrifuge will be used to filter any thing I can find. I want to try ATF first then used engine oil. hyd oil will be tryed we will try in the lister engine and then then in the Dodges Fords and Chevys.

Cj, Did you ever get around to experimenting with motor oil or hydraulic oil?

Anyone got any links to some good info on either?

vegetable oil and pushlock hose

hello to all

Yes I will be the first to say vegetable oil is hard on hose the worst is over and its back to making fuel again.

What happened is that the Parker push loc hose that comes with the fass fuel pumps is not the best hose for vegetable oil fuel, it works for about 5 years then it goes away. Aeroquip hose is not any better

the problem you cant see it happen its from the inside and works it way out your engine will quit before it leaks

the 2004 dodge that I have the one thats set up for this is the first to go bad

injectors last year and a few months later again.

What happend is the hose degrades and will break off small bits this runs thru the injection pump into the rail and in to the injectors out of the injectors and in to the head the return side and returns to the tank the 2003/2004 cummins have a spring check in the back of the head built into the banjo bolt this is what pluged and took out two of the new injectors along with running the rubber bits thru the injectors not the best thing for any fuel system.

what will work is teflon braided hose this is what I replaced all the nonstock hose with at 5. 00 to 7. 00 dollars per foot plus ends that run 15. 00 to 20. 00 each it was not cheap but neither are injectors. this is eaton/aeroquip BRAND Jic ends the same as (AN Type) fittings 37 degree flare. for about 350. 00 dollars the first truck is almost done one more hose to do return from pump to tank

the 2001 will be next for this new line.

Please don't run the vegetable oil in the rubber hose it will not last and you will have issues.

thanks for reading

SO we need to replace the hose between the stock filter and the CP3 with the braided line? The fuel filter should catch any degraded hose? I'm only running about 20 to 30 % fuel mixed with diesel in the 6. 7L. SHould I act soon?

Lines

Hello Ken

If the line is not stock I would replace it.

the stock lines seem to handle the wvo fine i think there made with viton rubber the good stuff

I know of 10 trucks that will need the hoses changed on them lucky most of them only run blends of diesel and wvo so they should be fine longer then mine running 90 % wvo things happen fast so to speak.

Added a 2 micron spin on filter it replaces the stock filter on the side of the engine it has a fass heater in the line if the temp gets cold to help warm the fuel also put in a 3 foot tube in tube heater on the fuel line coming from the fass pump. this brings the temp of the fuel to 130 degrees after it heats up the engine to operating temp.

hope this helps
