cold weather

Hello Ken and all the others that are dealing with the cold weather.

Ken the mix you are running winter blend at 100% no diesel fuel will plug filters at 32 degrees this was tested by Amalgamated inc.

A mix of this same fuel at a b-20 blend 20% your fuel and 80% diesel started to plug filters at -18tested at the same lab.

They have a new product that is good for biodiesel and I think they also said it works good in Vegetable oil also I got some info on it but I just dont have any money to try it. THEY HAD SOME OF THE BLEND I MAKE FOR TESTING.

Did I read that you are mixing at 50/50 and if so you should be good with the weather you are going to get but if you want just top off the tanks with diesel fuel and you should be good to go.

If you have problems remember gasoline will unjell the fuel fast your truck has a 34 gallon tank on it full of fuel 2 to 3 gallons of gasoline and 1 to 2 hrs of it in the tank will get the truck running.

I was up snowmobiling at Arrowhead lodge in the Big Horn Mountains two weeks ago the outside temp was -21 and the wind was blowing about 20 to 30 mph THIS WAS AT 10:00 IN THE AM the temp was a lot colder when the sun was down.

No I did not have my truck but there was a new ford truck that was jelled up and they ran the batteries down trying to get it running. the manager of the lodge got his truck started (I think it was pluged in )and towed him up from the lower lot and got the truck pluged in and a charger on the truck.

They were looking for an idea to unjell the fuel and the person I was with told them gasoline but he was not sure of how much to use they came out and talked to me and I told them with the amount of fuel in the truck they should add 1. 5 gallons of gas and let it sit for around one hr. either that or about a 400. 00 +tow bill down the mountain.

They did what we told them to to.

The truck started up and ran just fine after 1 hr the outside temp at this point was -10 and the heater in the block could not keep up with the out side temp being that cold. The owner of the truck was gone by the time we got back but he was really happy to get the truck running and not have to have it towed down to the bottom of the hill to warm up . this truck was an 2008 ford and what I also told him was to top off the tank as soon as he could with diesel.

hope this helps you

that cold you are getting just missed us but we have had colder for about two weeks and are really happy we did not get it.

I did get a small batch of fuel in my truck running a 75/25 blend right now I have about 1500 gallons of oil that I need to make in to fuel should be 50 degrees here by friday :)

weather and oil

hello to all

its cold again here and with out heat in the shop well its not flowing needless to say.

I have a heater riged up just no smoke stack yet I took a barrel stove kit you seen them and instead of using two barrels I took 6 barrels and made a three chamberd unit. Also bought an oil burner of of ebay and yes it will be burning waste oil of some sort.

I have tested it and it heats up great and you really don't want to be close to it when its running as soon as the weather breaks I will get the roof hole in and the smoke stack hooked up then we will have some heat and on with the making of clean oil.

I will post some pictures soon of this.

Thanks for reading

The web site looks good. Hope you get the heat going soon. We had our cold blast and thats that. Back to 50s and 30s. Kinda boring weather actually... .

fuel and heat what a great thing !!!!

Hello to All

Yes it great to have warmer weather, highs in the upper 50's the trucks are all back on vegetable oil we have had no problems with running this oil at the low temps it was a problem with where we were making it we had no heat in a metal building and when it was 15 below will it was to cold to make fuel.

We have a heater built and it will be running vegetable oil as soon as I get a heater built for the fuel line. This will take only a few hrs to build and it should be done this week. I will get some pictures as soon as its done and tested.

Ken, The pic of the fuel you sent me is great can you post it in this thread, others need to see what the oil needs to look like.

fuel

Hello Ken

Thanks for posting

This is what good oil looks like when its cleaned right you are doing it right I have seen some bad looking oil in trucks and they blame the oil for all the problems they have clean it right and the problems go away.

Thanks again Ken.

Choose wisely...

Since we dumped the chicken wing and chinese restaurant, our oil has been easier to clean and process. Those 2 types of restaurants fry a lot of animal fat in their fryers and it seemed to make it harder to process. I am sure its no problem for the chemical process, but for straight veggie oil like ours, its better to get oil that's mainly used for frying potatoes, onion rings and other tasty fare.

oil

Hello Ken

Yes the oil from the chinese and wing joint will be full of fat and the french fry and other would be better the oil I get from one of the places here in town has all of that plus fish fryed in it.

Sometimes it looks like creamy oil that has never been used when I get it and the smell is even worse. but it cleans up just great and runs fine the only thing different in how we process the oil is the Centrifuge VS Bag Filter both work great

out of 100 gallons of that oil I get 2/ 5 gallon pails of starch and breading. This along with chips and small chicken parts. yum yum. but 200 gallons of oil a month is good.

oil and diesel fuel price

Hello to All

The trucks are running just fine and things are going good.

I have a lot of oil and lucky for me a place to store it all , with the price of diesel and gasoline low the rush for a cheaper fuel is gone but it will come back. the others here in town are still making biodiesel and blending but are not as hardcore about it. so the oil supply is up and demand is down.

this weekend I will be working on the plumbing and hooking up the totes for storage I after these are full I will be putting in more totes for clean oil.

I do like the lower prices for fuel but they will not last the oil companys have drank from the 140. 00 barrel and liked it. they will be back for more. please don't get use to the cheaper price it wont last.

I would like to thank all of you out there that have tried the blending of vegetable oil as a fuel with your help I have been able to keep this going even though i have thought maybe its not worth it at times.

I will be making a few changes to my system later this spring if I can get some money together nothing big just trying to speed up the process.

Thanks again for reading

stuff and things

Hello to all

I have been out of town for a few days went snowmobling again, it is a blast to get back on one, I went three times last year and twice this year so far.

before that it was 1981 when I last rode one. Thanks again Dave for getting me back to this sport.

The trucks are running great and I have the new totes about hooked up if I can get this done this week end I will be able to get around 1000 gallons of oil cleaned and in storage then we will be able to make fuel in 250 gallon batches.

Thanks for reading

more cold /heater

Hello to All

We are having more cold weather, yesterday the temp got to 10 degrees and last night 14 below.

The city I live in puts down de icer on the roads, makes it thaw and turns to slush. Fun to spray others with this stuff, On my truck I have amp research running boards right now the are stuck because of all the slush the tires really coat the underside of the truck good.

The heater in the shop has a bigger tank for running longer I took a 15 gallon drum and welded in an outlet it will burn about 1. 30 inches of fuel per hr

around a gallon . Mid afternoon yesterday I started heating the shop up and 3hrs later the temp in side the building was 60 degrees STILL COLD but outside it was 10 degrees it will be better next year after all the walls have insulation in them.

the plan is to run the heater on vegetable oil , engine oil ,atf ,or a combo of the above I will be working on this this spring getting ready for next year this year is about over for heating I hope.

The trucks are running great and the blend has not changed from last year. the one thing I have seen is that the new mandate from the govt on putting 10 % ethanol in the reg gasoline is starting to show up in montana I have older gas that just gas but I will soon need to try the new blend of gasoline.

The summer blend should have 39 OZ

The winter blend should have 64 OZ of Ethanol in it.

I will do some testing on this I really think it will not be a big issue but I just want to be sure before it is.

totes, pumps, Stuff

Hello to all

I got the two lower totes hooked up and the piping done to the pumps the two pumps work great together and will pump the cold oil (60 degree) a full tote 275 gallons to another tote takes 35 mins thru the 5 micron filter at 35 psi.

With the oil warm 100 degrees out of the centrifuge 200 gallons thru the filter takes 15 min at 0 psi.

I used pvc pipe and fittings for most of the piping and spa flex for the flex needed to hook up the totes. as long as no gasoline is mixed in this should be fine.

the trucks are all running fine and nothing new with any of them

I did see today that fuel prices are going up they rose to 2. 079 for diesel up from 1. 999 last night and gasoline went from 1. 899 to 1. 939 as will. spring time fuel upcharge ??? any way thats all that is new I will be putting in some heaters for the oil totes this spring this will make it easer to pump the oil around next winter.

CJ,

I have read most of this thread and am curious about trying a mix of 80% wvo, 15%rug, and 5% methanol instead of ipa.

What are your thoughts and have you ever seen this. I have the methanol from brewing biodiesel.

I will be running it in a 2000 vw tdi.

Thanks

Randy

We typically mix our WVO which is mixed at least 10% RUG with diesel from anywhere to 50% to as little as 10%. During the summer I will run much less diesel. Sometimes close to 100% WVO mix.
