HI Guys; Had a check engine lite come on my 01 2500 for the first time ever. I have been very negligent in keeping up with trouble codes since I'm older and very computer illiterate. I borrowed a scanner to find out what codes had been recorded . A p1688M AND 1688p were recorded. I have a full shop manual and find that it shows an internal fuel injection pump controller failure. When the lite came on I was pulling my 5er home in heavy rain. Lost some power for a few seconds and then was able to pull over to check things out. All seemed to be okay so I got it home. After a few on off cycles the check engine lite went off and did not come on again. Did the scan and found the codes and erased them because I thought that maybe It was just a glitch. I forgot to tell you that I bought a used Edge

EZ programmer in Pahrump at May Madness in May and installed it. Everything has been fine until the check engine lite. Then today when getting lumber at Home depot with the engine running the engine raced and then died. I got some help and was able to disconnect the EZ and got it home without incident. I need your ideas. I'll call Edge to see if they have a thought. Thanks ,Brett

Usually 1688 means that your vp44 bit the dust but since it still ran you mite of got water in the connector of the vp44. You can try cleaning the connectors out with contact cleaner.

I believe I've read some threads where the Edge products caused the problem.

Hi MIssouri Mule; Thanks for the info. I contacted Edge. They gave me a trade in price for a new programmer. So I've got one coming. It concerns me though that the new programmer will do the same thing. Anybody out there have any info on this subject. I'm taking a trip to California on saturday and hoping for no problems. Thanks for your help. Brett

I know the Edge Comp had a tendency to either kill the VP or be fine for life (coin toss, no one knows why) when you tapped the pump wire. Never heard of an Edge EZ doing it though.

9 years on a stock VP? Darn lucky I'd say. I'm on my 3rd in the 45k I have driven my truck.

Hi Sticks, I think you responded to some of my other threads. Thanks. I got my replacement edge ez today. I've got 185k miles on my truck with the original vp44 pump so I guess I'm really lucky. If you have experience with the ez I'm wondering the directions said not to tow in level 3 which is what I was doing with the old module. Since I bought it used I had no idea I was doing something bad. I've got a built ats transmission and am not hard on the truck. What do you think or has anybody else got an ideas? Thanks, Brett

Do you have any gauges on your truck? Fuel pressure, EGT, Trans Temp, Boost...

The biggest risk to the VP44 is a lack of fuel pressure.

It has been too long since I dealt with the VP death codes, so I don't remember which ones actually have trouble shooting trees (where there may be something else at fault - relay, fuse, PCM... ) and which ones were 2 steps;
1. Verify code
2. Replace injection pump

The fact that yours kept running and the DTC light went away could indicate a glitch elsewhere.

As suggested before, clean your vp44 connectors. If that doesn't work, It will probably be your vp44. Sounds like you are running too much power for the stock fuel pump to handle anyways. I would look at an aftermarket unit. Your edge is probably fine. Save your money and put it towards a fuel pump.
