Gene,

Think how much faster a stick truck will be if it had an auto in its place. Just ask Eric McBride, or any other person who has gone from a stick to an auto in the sake of speed. Given equal HP, an auto will flat out walk the dog on a manual every day of the week.

John

In a short dragrace, perhaps. Quicker, but not faster. Top end, or anywhere you need the power to the ground, a stick wins, hands down.

Otherwise, nobody would have invented the lock up tq converter.

Hey Gene, my Dad says building that kind of transmission is no big deal for him, his question would be how much $$$$ ya got?

:D :D

Remember we already got billet input ,out put shafts and hub and some other stuff for you to look at in Muncie since we know you too scarred to come up here to the west coast. :D :D

Bill said last year at Muncie we brought a knife to a gunfight and got our azz's whooped , this year we're bringing a bazooka. ;)

A knife to a gunfight? Not so... Street driven all the way from British Columbia to Muncie, Indiana, sled pulled on Saturday, very respectable showing, then drag raced the next day, and driven home to British Columbia... . that was  very

If that was a knife, and you're bringing a bazooka, whooo doggies... . :D

On the contrary, if we have an automatic transmission builder that will step up and say that his trans will take what the stick guys are dishing out, and still work for towing trailers, we have a CLEAR winner in the great transmission debate.

This could be a start of something big. Send some built automatics(any and all brands welcome) to pulling shops in the midwest and see whos comes back in a box first. You know all the pullers running sticks are non-biased, we will destroy everybodys parts, fairly.

Thunder in Muncie could have a new race-automatic transmission destroying competition.

It will be a timed event.

Muncie in June, Scheids in August, then finish with maybe, Tulare, best out of three.

I think it would draw a huge viewing audience. :)

LMAO, But I think this is really a great idea.

In the test by Western Diesel on all of the trucks the Auto's were consistently quicker both empty and when towing both on the dragstrip and on the 7% and 15% grade. And that was with a 12,100 pound load. The auto's just flat outpowered the sticks in all area's. And not just by a little it was usually more than a second or two I can see where the stick is better for truck pulls but I would rather use the auto for all other uses. I just wish Dodge would step up to the plate with a bullit proof 5 speed auto. I guess I will be going with a DTT transmission next spring so I can install my comp box and DD3's. I've got 105,000 miles now with no problems but I'm wanting to Bomb without worrying about the transmission.

Sled Puller,

Building a transmission for a pulling truck wouldn't be too hard. But those engines in the midwest don't have enough low end grunt to pull it out of the hole. :) (them's fight'n words) hehe.

I wanted some ammo for you, so a few minutes ago I went out and made 15 psi of boost at 1250 RPM and it was still creeping up. Will yours do that?

Those midwest engines rev up to 3-4000 rpm then slip the clutch for 150 feet. That's impressive and it works well for the manual setups, but the engine would have to be setup completely different to work with an automatic. It's a package deal, not just a part to throw at a problem. So until those guys are ready to change their engine/turbo setup, I don't see any of them converting to an auto with any success.

Enjoy!

No, mine can't stop at 15, it goes to 60 so quick, I can't measure that low stuff.

I believe, If I made it to 15 against that converter, it would take off and bury the boost guage like always.

But oh my what a twisting force that is present going 15 to 60!

Auto challenged sled pulling?

Yea, I slipped my clutch too much at Muncie but it was only my second real pull and I didn't know any better. Was fun to have a clutch that would build 30lbs of boost at 2200 rpm, even before the sled moved:). Much better to let the clutch out and the Cummins dig, though. I've noticed that the auto equipped trucks all want to shift gears while sled pulling  . Some even need to downshift toward the end, must be they are losing so much horsepower driving the oil pump to keep the clutches, bands, servo etc engaged that they feel handicapped :D :D. Larry

chris, pullin season starts in march, come on out and stay a while.

Adam, Chris, Scott, and Bryan will all be bringing out the big guns this spring, well dog gone, 3 of the aforementioned are autos, you will fit in goood, come on out before muncie.

bottom line is the tech who does the transmission makes it or breaks it, under 400hp there are lotsa viable options, make a decision and live by it

I was just trying to get Gene fired up. :)

So Gene try it out. Put your truck in 5th gear at 1250 rpm and hold it back with the brakes. See how much boost you can make without letting it accelerate? I'd really like to know.

Brandon,

I may take you up on that sometime. Pulls in TX are few and far between.

-Chris

Are there many pulls in my area? SW Missouri. I have never been to one and they sound like fun. Where do you find schle's and information?

Hey Pit Bull if you find out where give me a ring and we can go check it out. I think Roger Rodbolt pulls but I'm not sure where in Missouri he is from. I'm to big of chicken to hook my stock auto up to a sled but after the DTT is in I may give it a shot and see what breaks.

Your right Roger should know, he is from Jeff City. I'll let you know what I find out.

Can this work?

I have a transgo shift kit, that I like real well but just want to put in a better T/C. Do I have to have the trans rebuilt just for that? 45000k on truck with no trans problems. VA, DD1, K&N runs mid 16's in the quarter mile. 260' in one and only sled pull

5th gear? Are you telling me that your converter is like a standard trying to launch in 5th gear?

I would have tried it, but we seem to be having an ice storm at the moment. I love this weather. :(

How long do I have to hold it? With this turbo set up, it is kind of progressive, buld, build-GONE! I may have to get an extra set of eyes for this expriement,... . Johnboy?
